My introduction to Opeth was through their 2003 album Damnation which is a different sound from the majority of the band’s work. Initially I left this as the album with the trash can, but that in reality is a minor but easy to pick out problem with the album. To me the snare isn’t actually all that bad because bands from the same and similar genres of metal ( mainly by metal) already use the same sounding snare and it can be a compliment to the overall sound of songs. This is my favorite AIC album and it is almost solely for Layne’s performance and how grimy/gritty his voice can get along with the instrumentals which complement each other like I feel their other projects up to this point had done. The example I would go with is Sludge Factory and the somber tone that Layne has going on for the verses and the book having a haunting presence. There are also some bangers like Again and the softer sounding duet on Heaven Beside You.
