MIKA - The Boy Who Knew Too Much
66

I was obsessed with this for a VERY long time. This review is so biased so anyone is welcome to ignore it, definitely his best album, everything is dripping in nostalgia for me. But I stand by a lot of the songs are great if a little simple...

Kate Bush - Aerial
91

This is one of Kate Bush's best albums to me, I feel like her later work isn't given enough credit, it's all so beautiful. This is an album heavily inspired by her son Bertie and you can really hear her fresh perspective. This album follows the same structure as Hounds of Love (my favourite album by her) and I think this is at her best. Even though not all the songs hit the flow and consistency of the album blows my mind.

King of the Mountain - 6/10
Pi - 6/10
Bertie - 9.5/10

MGMT - Congratulations
89

This album got a lot of shit when it came out for trying too hard to be authentic and too serious whilst missing the singles strength from oracular spectacular but I found this album way more immediately compelling and of the MGMT albums I found to have the most fun songs. It's my earliest memory of an album I genuinely loved and I regularly come back to it.

It's Working - 10/10
Song For Dan Treacy - 7.5/10
Someone's Missing - 8/10
Flash Delirium - 10/10
I Found a Whistle - 8/10

Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts
93

This is really fun, For me Van Der Graaf Generator are one of the best prog groups, everything is so wild and this is definitely my favourite album by them, I love the massive contrasts but I just don't really get the first track as much as the others whoops... its still a great track but the standard is so high.

Lemmings (Including Cog) - 7/10
Man-Erg - 10/10
A Plague of Lighthouse-Keepers - 10/10

Vibe Check/Cohesiveness - 9.5/10

Overall - 9.3

Nina Simone - Wild Is the Wind
94

This is my favourite Nina Simone album, theres so many beautiful moments and absolute 10/10s and there's fun stuff too.

There's tracks with a brooding tension like Four Women and Lilac Wine (these are my favourites), gorgeous ballads which are at times scary like What More Can I Say, That's All I Ask, Black is The Colour Of My True Loves Hair and If I Should Lose You. Other moments are fun and rhythmic and really bring out how individual nina simone is, who else could sing break down and let ... read more

Paul Thomas Saunders - Beautiful Desolation
85

This album gets cruelly little attention, it's so gorgeous from beginning to the end and I hope we get a new album. The singles holding on for love and I'll come running surpassed a lot of the stuff on this album for me so I'm excited, but tbh it's been 7 years now so I don't have high hopes... this album though being really beautiful can feel like a bit of a wash of noise until youve really uncovered all the details.

Its difficult to go track by track with this because they all sort of give ... read more

Susanne Sundfør - Ten Love Songs
89

This is such a fantastic fun pop album, it's my favourite Susanne Sundfør album, every song has been so we written but that's just classic susie. It's also absolutely wild the she wrote and produced absolutely everything on this album cus the production is insane.

Darlings is a gorgeous opener and set's the tone for this not actually being pretty Love Songs like the title suggests, she said she'd kill all her darlings lol and this is going to be a largely violent album.

There's so ... read more

Reptar - Lurid Glow

When this first came out in 2015 I thought it was the best thing ever, maybe it's cus of how fun I thought the first album was so I was very hyped up and maybe I thought the cover was cool. I still really like this but maybe I over hyped it and maybe it's not QUITE as good as I made it out to be. Anyway...

The best moments on this album are the anthematic big choruses in every chance I get and the almost vampire weekend style percussive madness similar to what was in their first album (like ... read more

Grimes - Art Angels

It's pretty obvious that I Love camp stuff and over pop and this is obviously that so clearly I'm going to love it. It also sounds like nothing else, it's very 2002 almost school disco but then it will scream at you and scare anyone at the school disco which I think is pretty cool.

I love the acoustic short tracks here life in the vivid dream and laughing and not being normal, I wish they were longer so I would come back to them more but they break up the sugary pop moments nicely.

Michael Kiwanuka - Love & Hate

I love this album so much, the whole thing really feels like a blistering heatwave, reminds me a little of lighter 70s prog like wish you were here of something for some reason, it's like they're even that similar. Maybe it's the longer, tense song structures and the guitar solos, or maybe it's just that it came out in the summer.

Cold Little Heart is such a flex its so good, it never feels too long or too short despite being nearly 10 mins long. Everything on this track feels necessary and is ... read more

Bon Iver - 22, A Million
95

This album sonically is wild and exciting to me. It's so out there but its never for no reason and helps to create and support what I think are bon ivers best songs. A lot of artists have tried recreating this sound and I love all the music inspired by this but no one does it quite as well as it is done on 22, A Million.

This album is at its strongest at the sweeter moments like Over Soon, Stratford Apts, 0000 Million and 666, where the songwriting is most similar to their previous work but ... read more

Lorde - Melodrama
97

Something about this album is so irresistible to me and I never really warmed to Lordes first album. Maybe it's the candy sweet production or it's the lyrical honesty. This came out when I was the same age as Lorde so resonates really easy with me and also coincided with me falling in love with really poppy pop music so maybe it's that but either way this is probably my favourite album of the 2010s...

Green Light is one of the best pop songs ever imo... its so goooood and so tense but also a ... read more

Charli xcx - Pop 2

I love this album so much, it's what got me into all things PC music (which now I'm a little obsessed with) and is also what got me back into chali xcx for the first time since true romance (which I am also incredibly obsessed with). Pretty much everything on this album is pretty flawless to me, at its worst there's only parts that are less interesting, they're still bangers...

Backseat is the most tightly produced, perfect pop, banger that I want to scream out everytime I hear. The "ALL ... read more

Ezra Furman - Transangelic Exodus
88

I remember listening to this for the first time and being wowed by having an indie rock album that was so unapologetically queer and at the same time not pandering. It's nice to hear liberating queer music that isn't for clubs or isn't pandering and is made by actually by queer people. I can't think of many artists that do this quite like ezra furman so the first time I listened to this I was beyond excited so this album means a lot to me.

Suck the blood from my wound is a metaphor about ezra ... read more

Fontaines D.C. - Dogrel

This album took me a while to get into, could never get past the first couple tracks, don't know why but I'm glad I did cus I was obsessed. Big bops.

Big and Sha Sha Sha I often don't give credit for for how fun they are, I love the big, searing anthemic tracks on here but they're great. Love the childlike quality on both of them, really gives the album a coming of age thing. From young boys to early 20s by the end, hopefully we get the next chapter in their lives soon, I'm so invested.

Perfume Genius - Set My Heart On Fire Immediately
93

This is my favourite Perfume Genius album and that's saying something cus I LOOOOve perfume Genius. I don't know why I think it's cus it feels like an accessible Xiu Xiu and I loved this more indie twist he has taken on this album and there's still the gorgeous tracks that still have the raw honesty of his early works.

The return of the low fi indie sound on this album is in softer tracks like Whole Life, Jason, Leave, Moonbend, Just a Touch, One More Try and Borrowed Light and they are more ... read more

Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher

This album is as gorgeous and vivd as the colour, a massive step up from her first album I love it so so much, not a single bad track...

Garden Song is a lot of people's faves not mine, I don't think the melodies stand out in the way that tracks like Halloween and Punsihers melodies do, they feel so timeless and perfectly simple, garden song for a song so simple feels a little laboured in comparison. It's still stunning.

Kyoto and ICU are a two tracks that stick out on the album and stop the ... read more

Niki & The Dove - Instinct

I really love this album, it's so fun, really sweet and anthematic which really hits my weak spot...
But it's a mess, even the best moments are messy but mostly the fantastic choruses carry it through.

Tomorrow is a really fantastic song, optimistic and fun and as bright and Firey as the cover. The chorus is obviously so fantastic t's a little watered down by getting lost in all the other fantastic choruses in this album, but that isn't really to the songs detriment, it's great for shuffle ... read more

T/W - suicide

This album is very special to me, 3 days before this album came out. My dad's best friend disappeared and lost his life to suicide. Never being that close with my dad and having a very limited experience of grief this album felt like not only a way to understand the way he was feeling but a way to connect with my dad in such a horrible time for him and bring us together emotionally even over such horrible circumstances so I owe so much to this album, making me revalue my ... read more

Self Esteem - Prioritise Pleasure

This blew my mind, I see this getting a lot of criticism, I can't say I get why the songs are obviously really well written delivered and production decisions that if they were made by someone more established would be considered innovative... something doesn't make sense to me but hey ho...

'I'm Fine' set's the tone for the whole album so perfectly, it's rumbling, crunchy March of rebellion. It's rousing and has nothing to lose. Melody is fab and she doesn't sound concerned for anything ... read more
