Godspeed You! Black Emperor - 05.14.03: Nantes, France

My new favourite GY!BE record, and it isn't even officially released. The absolute intensity of these performances, the pure energy, elevate these tracks so much, and make for a remarkable, wholly engaging listen. This is some of the best post-rock I've ever heard. Really deserving of my first GY!BE 10 (granted, LYSF and Slow Riot are long overdue an updated rating, but I digress). Excited to dive deeper into their bootlegs. If any others are even a fraction as good as this, then I'll be elated.

Oh no! It's Yoko! Part IV
The one where JSG forgets his words for 2 months and doesn't know how to review the goddamn album

I've really been struggling to get the words right for this album. There's a few ideas I want to get across, but for two months, I've had no idea how to actually tackle them. Well, I'm just tearing the damn plaster off so I can push forward in her discography.

Simply put, Plastic Ono Band is Yoko's first classic, and arguably her best release. It shows her ... read more

The Stooges - Raw Power

This one's for those who post nerd emojis whenever someone talks about the mixing...

The raw, ferocious, hold-no-prisoners Iggy mix | VS. | The limp-dick, personalityless Bowie mix

This just goes to prove that the mix is very much important to the end result of the music. Some of y'all may want to block your ears and scream at the top of your lungs, "Stop being a nerd and enjoy the music!" but that doesn't change the facts. Bowie was undoubtedly a master of his craft. He was ... read more

Brainbombs - Obey

Y'all wanna talk about scaring the hoes?

You listen to Brainbombs - Obey to cringe and complain about edgelord lyrics.
I listen to Brainbombs - Obey to laugh, and appreciate the hard, repetitive, noisy punk riffs.
We are not the same.

Avenged Sevenfold - Life Is But a Dream...

When the high school metal band discover Mike Patton for the first time and decide that THAT'S that best music of all time.

This album is terrible. If it wasn't so goddamn entertaining, I'd rate it a 1.
You see, Sleep Token; THIS is how you make a bad album. You can't even do THAT right.

Metal for retail stores.

I will not be the slightest bit phased if the next time I go to the shops I hear Granite jammed between Yellow and Sucker for Pain.

Taylor Swift - Karma

The Creator Has a Master Plan is a lot shorter than I remember.

+20 points because Ice Spice feature. She really brought the artistry to an otherwise generic Taylor song.

Yes. Yes I am biased.
No. No I do not give a flying fuck.

Just got done rewatching this show for the umpteenth time in ten years. Still a top 10 show of all time. No, not just "top 10 anime," but top 10 OF ALL TIME. As in, up there with Breaking Bad, The Wire, Better Call Saul, The Sopranos, the good seasons of Game of Thrones... I know I'm preaching to the choir as everyone with an internet access has at least seen an episode or two of Cowboy Bebop, but seriously, if you are one of ... read more

Ok, ok, I'll admit it; After the Night is a great album. Exceptional live performance, great material all round. But let's be real here...

This is NOT Otokotachi no Watare by Fishmans.
This is NOT MTV Unplugged in New York by Nirvana.
This is NOT Olatunji Concert by John Coltrane.
This is NOT Elevation by Pharoah Sanders.
This is NOT Dark Magus by Miles Davis.

John Lennon & Yoko Ono - Unfinished Music No. 2: Life with the Lions

Oh no! It's Yoko! Part II
The one where Yoko screams over a drone for 26 minutes

Now THIS is some experimentation I can get behind! Where the first album was one of fucking around for thirty minutes aimlessly, Life with the Lions actually has some sort of method to the madness. Granted, it's still just John Lennon and Yoko Ono believing they can do anything under the guise of "avant-garde", but hey, at least the ideas are interesting.

There's actual thought-provoking aspects to this ... read more

Oh no! It's Yoko! Part I
The one where John Lennon loses his mind and predicts what Captain Beefheart will sound like to people who don't like Captain Beefheart

You know, a lot has changed about me and my taste in the four years since I first heard Unfinished Music 1: Two Virgins. For one thing, I've grown accustomed to avant-garde art. I find a lot more to appreciate in music such as this very album, where it clearly isn't conventional music, and many are going to despise its very existence. ... read more

Metallica - 72 Seasons

Metallica's ode to their roots and influences.

Whenever Metallica release a new album, it's an event. Unlike when their biggest contemporaries, Megadeth and (the now retired) Slayer who consistently release(d) albums so you'd rarely have time to get bored of the last batch of new material, Metallica bide their time. They release at very deliberate moments... those being when they've finally gotten bored of playing the same deep cuts between the obvious Enter Sandman, One, Master of Puppets ... read more

You COULD listen to the same, tired, stale, old Metallica again.

OR you could listen to the brand-spanking new METALLICA 2!!!

The choice is yours.

This is NOT music. This is a WALL of HARSH NOISE. This is something you may infer from the genre, HARSH NOISE WALL. Unfortunately, AOTY mislabels this album as HARSH NOISE, which is incorrect. I'm sure that has led many to be profoundly confused when they're met with a WALL of HARSH NOISE after some nice field recordings of a shower.

Regardless, I understand that every one of us may have been distracted by something and some may forget to check the genre tags. But just know, this is a WALL of ... read more

Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want

Daughters are one of the most important bands in the progression of my music taste. You Won't Get What You Want dropped right in the period when I started to explore more music. And if you ever take a look at my earliest rates on this site, then you'll see that they were actually amongst the very first. Within a week of finding this site, I had reviews up for all four of their albums, and they were actually the fourth discography I ever reviewed, after my three childhood favourites, MCR, SOAD, ... read more

bjork for bjonks who bjont know bjood music exists

y'all know about that saying, that people only think old music was "better" because they don't remember all the shitty popular music that led the charts at the time? this is one of those for 2023. no one is going to be remembering melanie martinez in 50 years time. just some more tiktokcore that emerges from a chasm every so often for everyone to go "oh yeah, that artist exists." i literally never see anyone talking about ... read more

Atmospheric Black Piano

The Banshee is un-fucking-real. Who knew the sounds of piano strings could be so monstrous and sinister?

The dissonance found all throughout these tracks leads to some of the most unnerving, ominous, and sometimes even nightmare-fueling piano music I've ever heard. The occasional traditionally classical song passes by every now and then, a fleeting light at the end of the tunnel, but then you're thrown right back into the darkness. It's insane to me that all this ... read more
