Listening to this album is like reading Kurt Vonnegut. I hate to use the word “experimental”, but this album is uniquely different, while maintaining direction.
Runnin’ is one my favorite songs of all-time. It carried. The album as a whole is filled with so many fun boom-bap characteristics and thoughtful lyricism.
Such a fun album. It was tough to decide my rating for a couple of tracks, but "Glitter" is certainly underrated.
My rating is higher on this than Late Registration, but I feel like I don't like it quite as much. There were simply no duds on this album and that will make the rating end so much better. Every track on here is such a staple, and I need to consider that with my ranking. It is a little bit more of a poppy attraction rather than a heartfelt emotional masterpiece. Some phenomenal feats of talent all throughout this album from Kanye.
I loved this album. I think it is one of the best mixes of soul and hip-hop that I have ever encountered. The start of this album had me thinking this could be the best album ever. Kanye really takes thing to the next level with the heartfelt impact in these tracks, especially Roses.
Now I see why Kanye is uninspired since Lauryn Hill retired. I went through this entire album thinking, "When is the mediocre song coming?"... Nope, all bangers. Soul and Hip-Hop with a little bit of Scripture... Yes, please! I enjoyed this album from top to bottom, which is super rare.
Talent is on display here, Madlib is one of the best ever in his profession and Freddie Gibbs is one of the most overlooked in his. I love Freddie Gibbs and his flow. He switches his flow often on this project but it is almost always the same elite Freddie. There are are a handful of weak tracks but also a handful of staples. I really like the overall production style of Madlib, and I think it was so refreshing to hear Earl Sweatshirt on this project. This was a lot of fun.
Tons of soul and clever, witty rhymes present in this here debut album. Kanye introduced us to his fun style immediately with his first project. This project is very advanced, and numerous great tracks have stood the test of time. A couple of duds kept me from rating this album as high as the rest of the community, but this sure was a fun album to dive into. I can't wait for the rest of his discography.
When an album has five tracks that anyone could justify being a top 5 song of the 2010s, it is likely an amazing album, and that applies here. This dude LOVES interludes yet again, but that doesn't distract you from the fact that this is some of the best music of the 2010s. Multiple songs felt like I was watching an emotional movie or show. Frank has such a unique talent to paint pictures and have the listener "see" what they are listening to. Pink+White is a perfect example. The ... read more
This was a fun album. Steve Lacy has a lot of musical talent. Palace / Curse is rather underrated. Lots of fun on this album. Great vocals by Syd and Tyler went off.
This is one of those albums that you listen to and can hear how Frank revolutionized the genre. Many highs throughout the album and Pyramids is one of the greatest tracks of all time. Hopefully this guy drops more than 2 LP's in his career! Enough with the interludes though!!
She can SING—some of the greatest soulful tracks ever. For me, it's less about the content of the lyrics than it is about her incredible voice and soulful twang. Tons of amazing soul and production on this album, but is highlighted but Winehouse's unique abilities. The highs were very high and the lows were very low. This girl has SOUL.
Every person needs to listen to Weird Fishes/Arpeggi in their lifetime. I have been handing out too many 99's lately but this is one of the greatest albums I have ever heard. Multiple songs that just need to be played all the way through over and over again. The mental struggles of the perspectives that Thom Yorke is singing from are all deeply emotional and compelling. The vocals on Nude are incredible, some of the best I have heard in a long time. Weird Fishes/Arpeggi is the perfect ... read more
This is a compelling album. The introspective point of view of Kendrick is profound. When all is said and done, I like GKMC just a little bit better, but this album is more than real; it is very raw. Maybe the deeply political concepts in the album are too much for me, but they turned me away a little bit. A handful of 99s on this album, including Wesley's Theory, King Kunta, and These Walls.
The best storytelling ever... Kendrick is battling with wanting to be a "good kid" but resisting the temptation of peer pressure. He is also struggling with everyone coming after him because he is not affiliated with any specific gang, so it's weighing on his psyche. Then, a big moment in "Swimming Pools" changes everything, allowing Kendrick and his peers to find themselves and Christ. The album closes with him loving himself rather than battling with multiple versions ... read more
This is the greatest rap album I have listened to from start to finish. N.Y. State of Mind, The World Is Yours, and It Ain't Hard To Tell are 3 of the greatest rap tracks ever (99), all on the same album. Other songs like Represent (96) and Memory Lane (95) kept the album alive while the big three weren't playing. Nas' ability to manipulate these beats and still have a rhyme scheme to make me mean mug this hard makes it hard to keep him out of my top 3 rappers.
Likely the best album I have ever heard from top to bottom, IMO. The Tame Impala-level futuristic sounds and the vulnerable lyrics on a "Hip-Hop" album are a recipe for extreme success. So many elite songs on here...
New Magic Wand probably a top 10 song all time for me.
This is art. He went on a crazy run there at the beginning. One of the best album covers out there as well. A lot of great tracks, Westside Gunn rapping really well too.
