'Laurel Hell' is an album I've been so interested to check out. The couple singles I heard prior to it's release took me a while to fully vibe with, I had to adjust to the shift in sound. But after having the full album now, it all makes so much more sense in context. It's an album about self identity and Mitski's own journey, both her actual rise to fame as well as emotional journey. I do like this, it sounds like clean, well made throwback R&B soul stuff.
I just feel like it doesn’t hit the level as his last two albums, those were filled with back to back generational shit, and this feels more same-y and generic.
Also some of the production and musical choices feel somewhat irritatingly present. I stand by that the “doo do do do” part in ‘I Just Might’ just really kills and cheapens the vibe of what is a very fun song.
