Yves Tumor - Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds)
83

Not much like this out in the world of music, it scratches an itch. Alongside Heaven is a tortured mind, this album is some of the best stuff you’ll hear this decade.

Amyl and the Sniffers - Cartoon Darkness
77

Amyl and the band are back again, if you have never seen them live you are missing out. As for the music I feel it’s an improvement and about as introspective as you’ll get from a punk album.

JPEGMAFIA - I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU
87

Exactly what I want from the rock infused rap sound, I hope he continues this sound and it evolves. Peggy, Kenny Mason and Paris Texas are holding the torch for the rock rap sound and I can’t wait to see where it leads

Ravyn Lenae - Bird's Eye
79

It’s a solid RnB album with some great highs, sometimes albums are just good nothing more nothing less and this album truly fits that cliche.

MAVI - shadowbox
88

My favourite rap album of this year, Mavi has grown throughout each album he has released and in this album he continues his vulnerability and growth within in his life and putting it into a solid album. I truly believe he has the ability to create a classic rap album before the end of the decade.

Jean Dawson - Glimmer of God
86

One of my favourite albums to release this year. I have great memories from Chaos Now and I’m so glad to see the progression of sound and the will to still experiment. Each track is different from the other and while others see that as a negative, it is exactly what I look for in music

Favourite tracks: Darlin, Houston, Electric Children and Die For Me

Denzel Curry - King of the Mischievous South Vol. 2
78

A long time Denzel fan, it’s great to see him return to his roots and it was quite unexpected given how vastly different Melt is to this album. What I love about music and artists is the ability to be versatile and do something different each release and this follows the trend with Denzel’s discography.

Tyler, The Creator - CHROMAKOPIA
75

It’s not a bad album but is it as good as people make it out to be, no. There are a handful of tracks I really enjoy as is the case with most of Tyler’s albums, but in similar fashion the album as a whole is something I don’t come back to. I have seen comments comparing this to Mr Morale which is absolutely absurd. One is a one of a kind rap album whilst this is just another Tyler album that has similar sounds to previous albums of his.

Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
81

Undeniably a good album and arguably the bands best body of work to date. A staple album of the mid 2000’s almost 20 years on the album has held up well and has some great standout tracks that are still enjoyable.

The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
95

An incredible guitar driven album with great track after another. The Smashing Pumpkins have quickly become my favourite band and hold quite an importance to my life with tracks such as Disarm, Galapagos and Shame. It is loud and clear with Billy and his great songwriting on full display. Guitar riffs that get stuck in your head, in particular Hummer and the latter half of Soma. And of course the great track in Mayonnaise well known amongst pumpkin fans as being one of their best. A timeless ... read more

billy woods & Kenny Segal - Hiding Places
82

Very good. I enjoyed this a lot more than Aethiopes. The production is great throughout and Billy is hungry and somewhat pissed off. Great delivery with strong messages what more could you want.

Vince Staples - FM!
74

Thought I would revisit this short little project since it dropped 5 years ago yesterday. It’s a nice concept for a great time of the year. Feels like summer is a track I love, I was addicted to it for a while when it first dropped. Fun and Tweakin are solid tracks and fit the concept well. It’s short and enjoyable.

Kevin Abstract - Blanket
71

The production is solid but after listening there is nothing that standouts or is remarkable. I really enjoyed The Family which is essentially a Kevin Abstract project and I do usually enjoy the sound he is going for on this album, it’s a tad underwhelming on first listen.

Navy Blue - Song of Sage: Post Panic!
81

Some strong and potent writing on this album. Would go as far as saying it is one of the best abstract rap albums of the 2020’s so far. Tracks such as Certainty, 224, Moment Hung and Sea Bass are standouts for me personally. The production is top tier throughout and to date is Navy Blue’s best body of work.

Ameer Vann & Merlyn Wood - Slime In the Ice Machine
59

Fairly forgettable. The production is solid and honestly the standout. Underwhelming considering they are a good duo who have the ability to make some good tracks together but that wasn’t showcased on this one.

McKinley Dixon - Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!?
84

A quick runtime that cuts through with great production and quality well written songs. It’s one of the most enjoyable projects of 2023 and is one of the more underrated. Haven’t heard any music from McKinley Dixon prior to listening to this but will be sure to check out previous projects.

Mac Miller - Circles
84

One of the great send offs of a much loved rapper and character in Max Miller. Circles is the true example of a posthumous album done right and honouring a legacy of an artist who ventured into different genres and continuously progressed their sound. The first listen to Good News is one I will always remember as a chilling yet sad experience. Mac is an artist I never really listened to whilst he was here but exploring his discography has been an eye opening moment and to fully understand why ... read more

Freddie Gibbs - $oul $old $eparately
80

Thought I would return to this album a year after it has released. I still come back to Dark Hearted and Grandma’s Stove, this album is consistent throughout and blends nicely. It’s not groundbreaking work from Freddie but it is yet another solid project in his discography and arguably his best aside from working with Madlib and The Alchemist.

Earl Sweatshirt & The Alchemist - Voir Dire
79

Quality as you can expect from Earl and Alc. Tracks such as Geb and All the small things would have enhanced the official release but it is still a quick and quality album that doesn’t break expectations but does not disappoint. Caliphate is definitely one of my favourite songs of this year, Earl and Vince are a great duo.

TOBi - PANIC
68

It’s a solid project, on first listen I’m not a big fan of it. Flowers is still a standout track still almost a year after it was first released. The track with Kenny Mason was a little underwhelming as I think the two could have made a pretty good track. Might come back to this another time to see how it ages but at the present moment it’s not something that will be in my rotation.
