Gorgeous gorgeous song. Lyrics are a little more literal than what we’re used to with Justin but my goodness do they hit. Beautiful, sparse atmosphere with perfect use of violins halfway through and amazing vocals as usual
Completely different song from the original, removes the infectious chorus which was one of my favourite moments off Brat. The trippy beat still has appeal and Troye Sivan is a cool addition but the back and forth between him and Charli isn’t enough to bring this to the heights of the original
i’ve never been happier about a silly dolphin meme bringing a song back into the public sphere
ummm I really like this?!?!
Between this and Reason Why I seem to be much more excited for the album than most. This a fun, loose, wonky pop tune and the outro sounds so cool, it seems to be leading into another song? I hope it is, cause it would make for one hell of a transition. I love how free and out there the vocal layering is too, really helps it keep the distinct SOPHIE sound. This is awesome
I understand the criticism that the verses and chorus are a little disjointed and don’t fit super well together.
Don’t understand the rest of the criticism. This song slaps
Who knew I could like noise pop?
Goddamn the drums are so iconic. I need to blast this record on a $10000 speaker and fill my soul with the bass it would produce. It’s a shoegaze-y industrial rock dream pop emo punk post-rock acoustic electric phenomenon
Close To You by Gracie Abrams and Birds of a Feather by Billie Eilish came on after this album was done and reminded me what good pop music sounds like
All (somewhat) jokes aside, not the worst album I’ve ever heard but pretty exhausting.
There’s definitely a fair bit of improvement from Welcome to the Madhouse on here. For starters, a few songs contain very pleasant group vocals that make for some of the best choruses in Tones and I’s discography. We also get to hear more ... read more
Packs so many complexities of the artist-fan dynamic into 4 minutes with a killer melody, an incredible vocal performance and a creative yet seamless blend of genres. The true shining star of an already great album. This song is fucking incredible
Yeah nope, 11 years later I still despise this song.
I’m not even a P!nk hater, tons of her other songs featured heavily in my childhood and I still enjoy those to this day when they come on. But this is just unlistenable. The chorus annoys me to no end, the vocal refrains in it sound absolutely awful like she’s screeching in my ear. The love-hate relationship lyrics were infuriating to me as a kid and they still are now, they tackle the whole thing so poorly. It’s literally ... read more
Playing devil’s advocate here.
This is a really sweet and lovely song. I know the beat is some NCS type shit but it really works here. It exemplifies the anthemic nature of the song. I really enjoy this
I’m absolutely rooting for Tones and I. Seems like the loveliest person.
The production here is passable but the uninspired melodies really ruin this. I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of her upper register either, it can be quite grating as a lot of people have said, and the whole song is sung in her upper register. I actually don’t think her lower register is that bad at all but I’ve yet to hear that used to its full potential.
The chorus here could have had ... read more
An old, formerly unreleased fan favourite has finally seen the light!! And it’s awesome. Gracie made so many great soft songs for Good Riddance, but I’m really loving hear her push her vocals further over a much bigger sound with booming synths and driving beats. It brings out the passionate, desperate side of her songwriting, where she’s longing for experiences rather than just relishing in the sadness. Granted I think she’s made amazing music by doing that, but this ... read more
I can always trust Clairo. She’ll always get a vibe going or get in your feels or both.
Really awesome to have her back. This song is a great sonic direction to go in
Ahhhhh, Tortured Poets. The album that has seemingly divided the entire music world.
There’s no consensus on anything this album has to offer. Is the open and thesaurus-style lyricism good? Is Jack’s production still good and effective? Are there any timeless bangers here? Which of the 2 discs is better? This website seemingly has clear answers to all of those questions, but ask the Swifties and casual listeners and they’ll probably tell you very different things or have no ... read more
I haven’t had much motivation to write album reviews lately but I think the motivation is coming back. There are a couple long-form reviews I have planned but still need to write, I wanna be more engaged with music and this community again. Currently my most notable contribution to this website is my infamous Brad/Fantano effect list haha.
Anyway I was just vibing to Luke Hemmings and got the idea to write a review for this new EP in order to kick-start my reviewing again. And this is a ... read more
The plethora of Phoebe Bridgers comparisons make sense on one hand, as I can see how this album comes across as derivative. But I do feel as if it somewhat ignores the very impressive writing on this album. Her lyrics don’t copy Phoebe, nor are they basic mainstream singer-songwriter lyrics. They are very personal, detailed and poetic in a way that is very refreshing.
As for the rest of the album, it is probably a grower, being much more understated (and admittedly a lot less varied) ... read more
Positive user score yet the reviews seem to be kinda negative?
Regardless I love this song. Gorgeous blend of pop rock and dream pop just like on his last LP. Chorus goes super hard too, the refrains are so catchy and the high notes are euphoric as hell
Whilst I’m still bothered by their insistence on putting in annoying, extremely high-pitched sounds on every song on this album so far, I’m otherwise really impressed by this. This is a densely layered and complex composition that doesn’t lose any of the classic Vampire Weekend charm, it still has the quintessential bouncy melodies and poetic lyrics. Would be 85-90 without the noises still, but they don’t bother me as much here as they do on Capricorn, as they are buried ... read more
