There is no other album like Nostalgia Ultra
I discovered Frank Ocean at the beginning of my freshman year of high school. I quickly grew attached to the stories he would tell, in a way I still can't exactly describe or even understand. I wanted to be exactly like the narrators of his songs. I wanted pain-driven hedonism, I wanted mindless indulgences to waste time when I was lonely, I wanted to feel free and assured of myself.
Around the time I discovered Frank Ocean's music, I ... read more
i have spent significantly more time with this than any other piece of art and it will definitely stay as my favorite for a while
its helped me through so much since I listened to it a few years ago
I don't like the sound as much as I used to (though I still love it) but I'm not sure ill ever find another album that compares to the songwriting on here - there are so many layers and intricacies and references and emotions that I genuinely prefer it as a work of literature more than a ... read more
I expected this to be crude and unwelcoming and for this assumption i am a fool
This album is like if Debussy whipped out a guitar and started shredding Purple Rain
The most ahead of its time piece of art I’ve experienced maybe ever
(66 years between Debussy and Purple Rain vs. 67 years between this album and 2025 ๐ณ)
I'm probably in the minority but I wish Phil would stick to just his voice and an acoustic guitar more
HOW is this not more well known?? An album created primarily by Basquiat?? How have I been on this website for two and a half years and yet I've never seen anyone talk about this?? AND ITS SO GOOD TOO?? I didn't even learn about this through aoty, or anything related to music! I learned about it from a book on Basquiat! Lock in people!
Apiary is a great example of a failure to create a strong relationship between the artist and their music
I was really interested in this — large contributions from Gustavo Nome with backing vocals from Clementine Teare, writing credits from drug bug (๐๐๐) and Cartola, and an interesting recording process all intrigued me and provoked me to listen to this despite my aversion to screamo.
The issue of Apiary begins with its production. The recording of this album spanned four ... read more

The first three tracks are not at all my thing — but that last track is amazing
I LOOOOVEEE this entire album and its whole story so much But I really want to talk about Part 3
Part 3 is EVERYTHING I want out of metal music, and maybe even just music in a broad sense. It’s the perfect level of grandiosity. I don’t want all metal to sound like this — I just want it to evoke a similar atmosphere. Part 3 is the epitome of heavy music in general to me, and I cant stop listening to it nowadays
I have listened to more Swans albums than ANY other band or artist, and right now this is my favorite. I love how the album opens — the first three tracks are among the most easily lovable and enjoyable Swans songs I've ever heard, by far some of my favorite work from Swans. Unfortunately, the album takes a massive nosedive with the next three tracks, feeling like all the other mediocre-to-awful quality post-1996 Swans songs. Red Yellow to The Merge completely kills this album for ... read more
I didn't think I'd like this as much as others seeing as I'm quite tired of Windmill-esque music, but its quality overshadowed my prejudices
I know I'm in such a drastic minority on this site but I find jazz like this to just be... uninteresting. It just isn't enjoyable to listen to really at all
Significantly better than I had expected !!!!
Just like many others, I adore CSH for Will Toledo’s brilliant writing about his (mostly teenage) experiences. But this album is entirely different from that.
Firstly, it is VERY metaphorical, using a fantasy rock opera to convey its themes (which I think is a really cool concept). I’m much more of a fan of CSH’s naked lyricism with figurative language being simple yet effective, but I still enjoy this heavily figurative ... read more
I listened to this while walking on a beautiful trail and it really gave the feeling that everything will be alright, that the time will pass anyways. I think albums (or any art) that are able to do such a thing are amazing, so I appreciate this for letting me share that experience
This is a brilliant display of talent that cannot be understated. To have the vision to create an album like this, especially at age 15, requires something really special
Unfortunately, when you look past the pure humanity and soul behind this, there's not much there for me. As a piece of art, this is pretty special, but as a piece of music its just not something I think I'll find myself returning to.
I try to rate albums based on how much I like them sonically*, rather than how ... read more
