Wallows was the first band I obsessed over. Five years ago, I would've easily given this a 100. It's definitely not a 100 to me anymore, but I still love it. My favorite Kali Uchis album right now. I love la luna enamorada, vaya con dios, and quiero sentirme bien. Giant hits like telepatía get old quick, but I still love this album as a whole.
"Everywhere, everything, wanna love you / 'Til we're food for the worms to eat"
I hate this. I don't like it at all. 33 is a very generous score because this album sounds so forced. Everywhere, Everything confirms my hypothesis that Noah Kahan is trying to be an American version of Hozier. Hozier can get away with it because he's a good songwriter with a nice voice, but Noah Kahan's whiny, overproduced, wannabe folk makes me feel ill. I can't stand the title track. This album got me into Wolf Alice! It's a fun album to listen to in full, I have to get it on vinyl. My favorite songs are probably The Beach, Lipstick on the Glass, Feeling Myself, and No Hard Feelings.
"All the double-edged people into schemes / They make a mess, then go home and get clean"
In The Virgin Suicides, Cecilia Lisbon tries to kill herself. When the doctor asks her why, she responds, "Obviously, Doctor, you've never been a thirteen-year-old girl." As Jack Antonoff says, Lana Del Rey has a perfect voice. There's a stereotype about her music. Her music romanticizes subjects that shouldn't be romanticized, but like in real life, she just can't help it. She's so in love. In the appropriately titled Love song, she sings, "Touch me anywhere 'cause I'm your baby / Grab my waist, don't waste any part" like a love-struck teenager. Easily my favorite Bladee album. I'm not the biggest DGSBE fan, but I loved e, so I tried out some other albums in the genre. I think this and 333 do the best job of making Bladee's over-autotuned voice sound angelic. There are a few songs I just can't stand, like Side by Side with Thaiboy Digital. There are so many lyrics I could highlight on this album. Matty Healy's lyrics are hit or miss, but they're mostly great on ABIIOR. How To Draw / Petrichor, originally on an alternate version of I like it when you sleep... is an incredible track where George Daniel shines. Most of the songs on this album are muffled with the strange production, but some songs manage to sound great. 5FT7, mostly known for being on the Palo Alto soundtrack, is a wonderful song. I think the production style shines on that song, and Midnite Cobras too.
"I didn't want you to hear that shake in my voice / My pain is my own"
Car Seat Headrest nails the teenage experience with this album. Maybe my favorite after Twin Fantasy. Will Toledo fails in trying to hide the shake in his voice, but I'm not complaining, because it's one of my favorite things about Car Seat Headrest. This album was a HUGE step up from SOUR. I think that Olivia Rodrigo is the best thing in pop music right now. Her song for the Hunger Games film, Can't Catch Me Now, is beautiful and angry. GUTS has its signature pop moments, but it also brings 90's pop-punk influences into songs like pretty isn't pretty and ballad of a homeschooled girl. The real ballad, however, is teenage dream. "Writing the words / To the worst love song you've ever heard"
Really underwhelming, but Julien Baker always delivers. A lot of the record feels like fluff, but some songs just crush me. The breakdown in Anti-Curse, when Julien Baker belts, "I'm swimming back / See, you don't have to make it bad" makes me float. I adore the boygenius EP, but this one had a few too many misses. Still looking forward to new music!
"It's a possibility to live without lips"
It's hard to convey how some of these songs make me feel. Every single day, I contemplate tattooing "Park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me" right above my ass. I will love this album forever.
"And for the lovers who found a mirrored heart / They just remind me I'm without you"
Sex and heartbreak
I think mirrored heart is a perfect song. "It's all for the gain / It's all for the lovers trying to fuck away the pain"
Tahliah...I'm so sorry for what the world did to you. You deserve better. At least we got this album in return.
