I am scared. I miss Jack ngl. I even prefer TTPD over this because atleast the inundating tracklist somewhat hid the weak parts there but here, it's front and centre - inescapably nauseating.
Very detailed and demanding in terms of attention required to follow along. Glad that it rewards you well for the attention.
The tracks being short somehow still feel dry. Hooks are lacklustre. Subject matter from track to track sound redundant. The highly tuned vocals can work on some tracks but listening to an album worth of music with very little dynamics or intriguing matter in it is exhausting. Some instrumentals are decent but not sure if that alone is worth staying around for.
Solid debut album! The writing and production felt a bit clunky on occasions (wasn't very much on board with some folk-pop-electronic fusion choices, especially on the first half) but the moments it got to truly shine was on the more tender moments when both writing and production felt much more purposeful and focused.
Yeps - Collage, Between Us and Them, Figured Out
Nahs - I miss her and I blame you, Good Intentions
Eh
I do appreciate some aspects of this. But it takes looking past several swing and miss to get to the bits that connect.
Bit inconsistent but there are some gems in there that come with patience.
I tried. I really tried giving it all the benefit of doubt.
Edit - Just discovered context of a lot of these songs and this has worsened my opinion in a major way, to put it lightly. Not gonna rate it because there's just no way to judge this just for what it is. So I'm taking my rating off.
Yes all the things we love Lana for its here and it's in plenty. Her writing works when it's dramatic and moody enough to just not be pretentious but on the smallest occasion it happens, it leaves that lingering bad taste which is hard to get rid of. The highlights from this are easily Lana's best.
