System of a Down - Mezmerize
87

It's a really great bounce back after the kinda underwhelming to "Steal This Album!". It's absolutely all over the place, with some of the most unqiue song structrues and composition I've ever heard. I feel like if a lesser band tried to do SOAD's style of metal, it would just come off as irritating, but here, everything manages to come together really nicely. I think quality-wise this is right below Toxicity, and above their self-titled.

Kota the Friend - NO RAP ON SUNDAY
91

This could honestly end up becoming one of my rap AOTYs, I'm surprised how much I enjoyed this. It definitely plays on a formula that's done before, but it's a formula that really works for me. The production was really good, and complimented Kota's lowkey style of rapping. I thought the features were all really great also.

Full of Hell - Roots Of Earth Are Consuming My Home
88

I really love how pure noise was implemented in this album. It's only super apparent on a few songs, but it adds so much to the intensity of the music, and how overwhelming (in a good way) a lot of the songs sound. As with any good grindcore album, it doesn't give you any room to breathe, it's just a near half hour of pure energy, and it's great.

Old Saw - Country Tropics
86

It's a really unique album within the ambient sphere. It's a lot more rustic sounding than a lot of other albums in the genre, and I think it amplifies the emotional impact of a lot of music here. I'm excited to hear what else these guys have done.

Steve Roach - Structures from Silence
92

It really feels like you're floating in space, everything about this is so beautiful.

This Heat - Deceit
83

You really get the sense that these guys were just allowed to make whatever msuic they wanted to, and were allowed to be as weird as they wanted to. It's a fascinating album, but I think their self titled has higher highs.

The Beatles - Beatles for Sale
51

This feels like a step back from "A Hard Day's Night", you can tell that they're just making the album that's expected from them, rather than focusing on pushing their music forward. That's not to say there aren't great moments on this album, I like the vocals, and there is definitely some charm to be found with the sound of this album, it's just as a single project, it feels a little underwhelming.

A Tribe Called Quest - We got it from Here... Thank You 4 Your service
80

After being pretty underwhelmed by their previous two albums, I'm impressed at how well they managed to translate their style to 2010s rap. This is also probably their most experimental release, taking influence from a number of different sources, and exploring a number of new and different styles. Despite the refreshing change in sound, not every song works for me, with them firing on so many cylinders, some songs just click with me more than others.

Kraftwerk - Die Menschโˆ™Maschine
89

This was really cool to listen to. I love how it still sounds futuristic nearly 50 years later, you can see how influential this album was on electronic albums to come. I think some songs, paticurlarly the last 2, can feel a little repetitive, but it's all still a really respectable album.

Ludus - The Seduction
84

I really like how weird the album gets at times, it means the album is pretty much never gets boring. The range from tightly packed fast-paced post-punk to completely improvisational 10 minute pieces was really interesting, and really well executed. The feminist themes in the writing throughout the album was also handled with care, and I think they were also conveyed in a really interesting way through the experimentation of the album.

Songs: Ohia - The Magnolia Electric Co.
81

There's an undeniable warmth to this album, it's incredibly slow, in a good way. Jason Molina's voice is also perfect for this style of music, it has a delicate and emotionally heavy quality to it. It took a little while for this album to properly click with me though, so it probably deserves a few relistens.

Yung Abes - been up
80

Thanks @yungabes_ for sending me your new song!
I think the production is definitely the highlight of the song, there were so many different little parts that caught my attention, but i never found the production too messy. This style of rap isn't something I'm super well-versed in, so I can't say if it executes on the formula well, but I also just found the song super enjoyable to listen to, great work.

Jagatara - ๅ—่›ฎๆธกๆฅ
75

I love his energy throughout the album, the performances are really expressive and fun to listen to. The songs however, do feel a little long and repetitive. I think the combination of punk and funk is pretty cool to hear, and it's executed really well, but I've also seen it executed better in other places.

GZA - Liquid Swords
70

I thought this album was alright, but it also at no point rose above being a "decent 90s hip hop album". The rapping wasn't really all that impressive, although the writing and the production definitely were, perhaps I need to give it another listen, but I unfortunately didn't get as much from this album as others have.

Jak3 - tied up in GOD'S hands
89

Jak3's style of sound collage manages to just work with me so well. While I think I preferred the sheer magnitude of "September 1985 Hurricane Rain", I still absolutely adore the dreamy soundscapes this album contains. The use of samples layered on top of each other at times reminded me of a less digital bliss3three. There's also a smaller focus on hip hop here, which makes it so he isn't just doing the same thing again with a differnet coat of paint.

Matt Elliott - Drinking Songs
83

This wasn't really what I was expecting at all, especially with the last track, but I was pleasantly surprised. A lot of the songs feel like they're less songs about drinking and more trying to convey the mind and thought process of someone completely drunk. I think the album is really interesting and compelling if you view it in that way, it's a really great and unique approach to folk music.

Brian Harnetty - Silent City
75

I think the album's a little inconsistent, going from interview, to old-timey performance, to instrumental to modern folk song, but not in a way that feels very cohesive. That being said, the songs themselves were really pleasant and easy on the ears, I really like Bonnie Prince Billy's voice, and the interview portions did add a good bit of charm at points.

Xiu Xiu - Plays The Music of Twin Peaks
79

I'm only really vaguely aware of Twin Peaks, so it probably hinders my enjoyment of the album a little bit. That being said, I still did get a lot from this album. It's certainly different from any other Xiu Xiu album I've heard, being a very atmospheric noise rock album. Some parts clicked with me more than others, and the final track felt a little out of place, but other than that, I enjoyed the album, makes me want to watch the show.

Michel Banabila - Through Global Frequency
89

An album I was reminded of while listening whas Brian Harnetty's "Shawnee, Ohio". Both album's relied heavily on spoken word pieces from a group of different people all tethered together with a consistent theme. While I can't understand what's being said on most of the album, I think the theraputic ambience, in addition to the album name itself does great work at conveying that these are simply people recounting their life stories, or discussing aspects of their ... read more

Five Foot Failure - ghost.
77

Thanks @lila_ for sending me your album!
I really love how unique the production is, it manages to balance being scattershot and subdued at the same time really well. Really great, emotional writing also.

On JID - God Does Like Ugly
"@Phiroman I think it comes down to a personal preference thing, my favourite JID tracks are the ones where he's the main focus throughout. Not saying he can't bounce off others well, but I think he really shines when it's just him rapping his heart out."
On JID - God Does Like Ugly
"@Phiroman I expected this album to be weaker than the forever story, but it's weaker in ways I wasn't expecting, if that makes sense? I appreciate him not trying to recapture the forever story's magic, instead stretching his legs and trying out different musical influences on some tracks. I think by "disappointed", I just mean that I wish this album was more consistent quality-wise. Also by "Not giving it his all" I was referring to the tracks where the features feel like they do a lot of heavy lifting, and JID is less present than I was expecting."
On Armand Hammer - Race Music
"@Phiroman I know they've collaborated before, but this is one of the first times they've come together to make an entire project with a shared vision. Because of this, there are ways they bounce off each other that would be refined over time. Their rapping abilities and writing are still really impressive."

On HEAL XO - dis/ambiguate
"@healio I would say my favourite track would be "nuit (poissons lune)": the way all the different vocals are layered on top of each other is simply angelic, there's something so soothing and meditative about that song, it's the highpoint of the album for me."
On healio's review of Tristwch Y Fenywod - Tristwch Y Fenywod
"@healio Yeah I get that completely, as someone who's only experience with Welsh music was pretty generic pop rock and folk, this album hit me like a truck. Definitely has an underlying sinister atmosphere to it."
