Although it can't be denied that the singer of As Everything Unfolds is talented, on the album's eponymous opener I couldn't help but hear hints of Horrid Henry that prevented me from true appreciation. From there, this LP unfortunately does not get much better
iann dior slapped in 2019. However, unfortunately for him, that was 4 years ago, and now his music sounds bland, tired and forgettable. Despite its few highlights, this is epitomised by 'leave me where you found me', which does in fact leave its audience where they started: in a state of indifference
While Enter Shikari have evidently tried their best, this album doesn't quite land for those who aren't included in their famed cult following. It even feels out of touch with itself, although perhaps this isn't helped by songs which boasting obscenely bizarre titles such as 'Giant Pacific Octopus'
This album is rich and raw with emotion, combining eloquent and expressive lyrics with Florence's distinctly exceptional vocals and compelling storytelling to form something which, overall, nears perfection. This is without a doubt the band's best work, surpassing anything that 'Ceremonials' and 'Between Two Lungs' hoped to achieve by a long mile
While hits such as 'Hot In It' add an element of fun to this album, but aside from high-profile features Tiësto's production overall fails to match what it once was, instead sinking into monotony and mediocrity. In a world where sameness and bland repetition rules, the Grammy winner evidently lacks the 'DRIVE' he searches for
Part English and part French, 'No Signal' was certainly a surprising listen - French's flow is supported by production drawing influences from drill, trap and pop alike, demonstrating a genre-blending approach throughout the project which is avoided by most of his calibre. While it has its questionable moments, overall it is clear that the multi-national wunderkind has crafted a decent, cohesive collection of songs
Before pressing play on this collection, I for one had not been entirely acquainted with the works of Mac DeMarco. While I am aware of his popular tracks, and of course the songs that constantly resurface on platforms such as TikTok, this was the first extended work of his that I have experienced. Boasting 199 songs, ‘One Wayne G’ reaches a lengthy runtime of 8 hours and 43 minutes, and consists of a variety of dated demos from May 2018 to January 2023 which leave its purpose ... read more
'We Go Again' demonstrates the reflective lyrics and impressive flow that ENNY has become renowned for in the UK rap and R&B scenes, although it fails to compare to earlier career highlights such as 'Peng Black Girls'
Throughout his third solo album, Avelino certainly claims his place as the next star in UK rap, with help from frequent collaborator Wretch 32
Despite her undeniable vocal ability, Eloise's debut LP fails to establish her as an upcoming star, instead leaning into cliché which often prevents her from showcasing her true potential
Reinventing some of their most popular songs, Twenty One Pilots abandon the typical acoustic approach taken in previous MTV Unplugged sessions, a decision explained by frontman Tyler Joseph when introducing the duo's ideas. While some of these versions boast similar quality to their originals, most notably 'Tear in My Heart', others fall flat and don't work as well as Joseph and Dunn presumably imagined they would. Overall, for a live collection this is at times unbearable, although it does ... read more
On 'Views', the self-proclaimed Toronto '6 god' leans between introspective, contemplative bars and haughty, pompous boasts - two qualities he has become renowned for since the beginning of his career. The problem with Drake, however, is that his highlights are truly remarkable, which in turn causes the low points of this album to be particularly low. Many would argue that this is Drake doing what Drake does best, but if his best is lines such as 'You toyin' with it like Happy Meal' then maybe ... read more
While Malcom Todd’s ‘Shower Shoes’ EP finds its use as pleasant background noise, the consequences of this are that it fails to function as anything more. It is rare that one of his songs stands out, and none of them attempt to do anything different or unique, with the exception of definite highlight ‘Slowww’. Saying this, there is nothing inherently wrong with this project and Todd demonstrates sure potential which may well be unleashed in the near future
The Bristolian provides yet another gorgeous collection of songs, this time more uplifting than some of her earlier work and perhaps better for it. As a Dead Oceans labelmate of heavyweights such as Phoebe Bridgers and Japanese Breakfast, Fenne Lily could easily have been overshadowed - her clear talent for songwriting ensures otherwise
Although this may be the weakest Waterparks album to date, it still has glimpses of the greatness they introduced themselves with through 'Double Dare' and 'Entertainment', as well as the genre-defying experimentation of 'FANDOM' and 'Greatest Hits'. However, where previous cuts such as 'Watch What Happens Next' effectively condemned the industry, the same angsty approach in songs on this album such as 'REAL SUPER DARK' does not work quite as well for a 31-year-old Awsten Knight. That said, ... read more
Throughout the third instalment in their weird and wonderful series, Bad Sounds continue the magic that cements them as one of those bands that deserve to be on top of the world
In recent years, electronic music has experienced a rise in the mundane, pioneered by Fred again.. and others who utilise voice notes, clips from the internet and anything from their surroundings as a basis for their music. Here, Love Remain makes their way into this scene, albeit with a limited effect. Where Fred again.. captures the magic of the real world through his 'Actual Life' series, Love Remain's 'Still In Awe' appears as a coy imitation. While this project may have strengths in its ... read more
In one word, this album is boring. There's nothing particularly wrong or bad about it, but Illa J and Harleighblu have managed to create one of the most monotonous, uninspiring pieces of work released this year
Despite the jokes which can be easily formed from its title, Peggy and Danny's 'SCARING THE HOES' is an experience and a half. Combining experimental production with near-flawless flow and vocals from the two prodigies, this album doesn't scare, but stupefy
For a duo once producing culturally iconic tracks year on year, 'Sremm 4 Life' occasionally falls flat. Swae Lee sounds less inspired, and Slim Jxmmi less lyrically adept, culminating in a project which is at times disappointing even when considering highlights 'Mississippi Slide' and 'Tanisha (Pump That)'
