if this album were a plant, it would pretty damn healthy hosta.
yes, there are a lot of influences being worn on their sleeves here, sure, be a nostalgia boy all you want, but it doesn't get in the way of the excellent hooks, stunning production, and interesting lyrics. seriously, this album has such a lush presence to it. i imagine the theatre kids from the 2010s at Pitchfork getting UNHINGED to this live.
good shit good shit.

essentially, if after i listened to an album i immediately give it a second listen and fuck up my listening schedule, it's GOTTA be good.
this falls into an interesting space of sound collage but also having some crazy catching melodies and songwriting. think of Perfume Genius but being both more and less accessible at the same time. catchy enough for the people paying attention, and weird enough to scare the normies away.
aka, this is a GREAT album for meeeeeeee :))))

if you told me that the frontman for Cheekface was the lead singer of Cake’s son, i wouldn’t bat an eye.
also uhhhh, it’s like their last album, except now i’m really bored!!!
5. Life in a Bag - 5.0 - this one doesn’t make me bored
heavens this is so good.
1. Sweet Leaf - 5.0 - why does Ozzy sound like an angel on this.
4. Children of the Grave - 4.5 - the progression here is nutty.
5. Orchid - 5.0 - THE PROGRESSION HERE IS NUTTY.
chiqui chiqui chaka chaka.
impeccable flow. this unfortunately makes it a bit too wishy washy from track to track to really add variance ALL the time, but the moments that are good here are definitely good. this number has the potential to go up.
don't pretend for a MINUTE this is on the same level as Isolation, though.
3. Iqual Que Un Angel - 5.0 - this one grooves SOOOOOO HARD
8. Young Rich & In Love - 4.5 - take three guesses what kind of playlist this got added to
shy.
did y'all ever have a talent show in middle school or high school where the shy introverted kid gets on stage, looks like they're about to yarf it all away, but then come out with a performance that takes you completely off guard and the audience starts howling their praises? if you haven't, it's actually a pretty cool feeling, go back to middle school and you'll see what i mean.
it's like when Greyson Chance shocked the world with that Paparazzi cover and then NOTHING came of it. this ... read more
look, look, i'm happy that this release actually gave music journalists in early January something to talk about, but i don't know if it's really THAT good, like seriously is this actually THAT good.
no doubt there's some cool stuff here and there, and the vocalist is actually pretty versatile, but man oh man am i ever going to listen to this again?
the answer is the strongest "maybe" i've ever uttered.
time to give the album the boost it deserves.
i listened to their 2021 self titled and that what’s i remember about it. literally, it was the fact that i did at all. this one here actually consistent production and great, GREAT songwriting. ranges from super silly to oddly movingly politically. the chord progression change ups are as tasty as a honey bun. shit is so sweet man.
1. Movie’s Architecture - 4.5 - would be a 5.0 if the intro was trimmed by like 20 seconds
3. Artschool - ... read more
add this to the list of albums that i admire more than i enjoy.
4. Blood - 5.0 - chord progression on this one pretty as HECK dude.
5. Hanging - 4.5
honestly not bad, 21 really belts some dingers into left field with this one.
it’s a shame that the last three tracks are DOOTYYYYY…
2. all of me - 5.0 - something real about this one dude.
all 29 tracks were recorded and mastered in 29 different motel rooms. this is both the best and the worst of the albums he dropped on NYD. i'm so confused!!! is anybody else confused?!?!?
this album is if you took Freaks To The Front by Amyl and The Sniffers, and Pulling Mussels (From The Shell) by Squeeze, and you threw it in a blender and served it to 29 hungry church goers.
18. Promises - 4.5 - this track actually rips
in today's episode of "Ryan Adams drops four albums in a day"...
...Ryan Adams watched Letterkenny ONCE.
this is so bizarre that this is a decent amount better than the first one i listened to. the songwriting and instrumentation seem to have a little bit more punch and grit to them, and, like, i actually SAVED one of the songs this time too.
...oh, yeah, don't think for a second i'm going to do more than one listen through before i write the review, motherfucker dropped four of these in a day.
5. Memory Lane - 4.5 - i think i like this because it reminds me of Atlantic City by Bruce ... read more
uhhh i guess Ryan Adams decided to pull a King Gizz and release four albums in a DAY, welcome to 2024 goons.
i think my dad would have bought this album on CD at Borders 15 years ago, play only this when he's driving for two months, and come to a resounding "it's okay".
did u know over half of the song titles start with the letter "S"?
