JID - God Does Like Ugly
83

God Does Like Ugly extends the rich run of form JID has been on since The Forever Story. His amazing signature flow, production that without a doubt bangs and great feature work, there's overall a great mix of beauty and destruction all wrapped up into a 57 minute experience. Just missing out on that groundbreaking factor to climb up to the next level for me.

Favourite songs : Of Blue, For Keeps and On McAfee.

Least favourite : What We On.

black midi - Hellfire
79

I took a risk and bought this album on vinyl and did my first listen to it on my record player, I knew I could definitely come out of this experience not liking it as I wasn't too keen on The New Sound, but thankfully black midi is a definite step up from Greep's solo work.

I really haven't heard anything like this, just a really chaotic, rambunctious and whimsical experience. The instrumentals are all over the place yet so well arranged, some of the stories being told are so ... read more

Ethel Cain - Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You
88

Ethel Cain offers us beauty in a slow, deep and stabbing way. The affectionate storytelling, gorgeous vocals and delicate instrumentals that keep building and gaining atmosphere bundle together to create one of the best singer-songwriter albums of the year.

Favourite songs : Nettles and Tempest.

Least favourite : Willoughby's Interlude.

ESPRIT 空想 [Esprit Fantasy] - 200% Electronica
91

Another captivating, hypnotic, vibrant and cozy effort from George Clanton. It's amazing how well he can build worlds in his music with such ease. I'm two projects deep in his discography and he's yet to miss. Brilliant 👏.

Favourite songs : Warmpop and Seal.

Least favourite : Slow 2018.

The Microphones - The Glow Pt. 2
90

There's a true beauty in Phil Elverum embracing the sonic imperfections of this album and as a result turning The Glow, Pt. 2 into one of the most organic and genuine albums of the 2000s.

Favourite songs : I Want Wind To Blow, The Glow Pt. 2 and I Felt My Size.

Least favourite : [untitled]

Mydreamfever - 1. Silence Is the New Noise
70

Another one of Parannoul's side projects sees him going into this field recording, electro-acoustic ambient style which can be seen like white noise at times but I just love how interesting, relaxing and unique it is, so definitely a positive experience to sit down and chill out to this album.

Favourite song : Strange and Funny World.

Least favourite : Silence Is the New Noise, Frequency Is the New Melody.

Chico Buarque - Construção
90

An overall beautiful and meaningful collection of Samba classics from Chico Buarque. The instrumental panning is really interesting, the tracklist is consistently great and all of these songs have a wonderful sense of warmth to them. Thanks Quadeca for putting me on!!

Favourite songs : Cotidiano and Deus Lhe Pague

Least favourite : Acalanto.

Dev Lemons - SURFACE TENSION
79

For a pretty lengthy album rollout, SURFACE TENSION's content is way too short and underexplored, but that doesn't remove the fact that production wise, this album does rock.

The contrast of Alt-Rock bangers and great, lushious guitar ballads with a really nice and spacious atmosphere is quite impressive. Her vocal delivery can be quite grating at times but overall, Dev can seriously push forward and make something really memorable with a more realised and longer release in the ... read more

Dijon - Absolutely
88

This really raw R&B sound that Dijon and Mk.gee have is what separates them from the rest, Absolutely is so stripped back and meditative with gushes of passion and groove, I really wish I got around to it sooner. Can't wait to hear the new album next month.

Favourite songs : The Dress, Big Mike's and Rodeo Clown.

Least favourite : Scratching.

Quadeca - Vanisher, Horizon Scraper (Original Blue Vinyl Deluxe)
90

My new favourite record to spin :) these extra 3 tracks are unbelievable, if any other artist made these extras it'd be considered their best work, but for Quad it's only D side scrap. Unreal.

Björk - Medúlla
84

After a generational 4 album run, Björk disregards commercial success and produces an almost complete acapella album, ranging from choirs, beatboxers, weirdly interesting vocal harmonies and her amazing voice a lot more isolated than usual, Medúlla is a clear standout album in her discography in terms of pure boldness. The beatboxing does throw me off at times and although this album is a tough pill to swallow, once fully digested, you can then realise how well this idea came to ... read more

Lupe Fiasco - SOS
89

Lupe's been killing it since Samurai. Another great track that would've fit perfectly on the album. Can't wait to hear what's next.

Freddie Gibbs - Alfredo 2
82

Another reassurance of the unreal chemistry of Freddie Gibbs and The Alchemist, better than the first installment for me. Although this production style of The Alchemist is aging to be quite repetitive, the flute work, insane flows and catchy hooks makes this another win on the board for the duo.

Favourite songs : Ensalada and 1995.

Least favourite : Empanadas.

Quadeca - Vanisher, Horizon Scraper
100

Quadeca has outdone himself on Vanisher, Horizon Scraper. He's excelled to unprecedented levels in all terms of songwriting, production, visuals and anything that comes with it. It’s been a steady climb up to the top for him, but now he’s truly reaping the rewards of being one of the most authentic, dedicated and talented musicians of the decade.

Each track is multi-phased, grandiose, ambitious, meticulous and fully realised. The many different genres and emotions assembled ... read more

Quadeca - Voice Memos
40

With Vanisher FINALLY releasing tonight I thought it would be funny to go back to the start and do my first full listen of Voice Memos.

With this being a rap album from a YouTuber in 2019, I knew it was going to be incredibly corny, and the bars are questionable to say the least.....the fast rapping flow has aged so poorly and the overall delivery of this album is just poor. Really poor. I wasn't expecting some piano ballads though so that's cool I guess. The production is very ... read more

Arthur Verocai - Arthur Verocai
87

Been really loving some bossa-nova recently and this album has grown my love even more. Really one of the most affectionate sounding genres. I mean this is pure instrumental bliss. Just wished it was longer.

Favourite songs : Pelas sombras and Na boca do sol.

Least favourite : Seriado.

thatcherblackwood - basalt
95

I'm going to have a heart attack

46

Rage as a genre should lean more into the raw energy and overwhelming distortion that Che captured on this album, with that being said, that doesn't mean it sounds good though.

Favourite song : BA$$ and MARCELINE.

Least favourite : ROLLING STONE.

Scubadiver - Search Session Two
95

Scubadiver blows my mind away again on Search Session Two with some of his most catchy hooks and signature mesmerising production.

He's really going deep into a warm Bedroom Pop bag on here if I HAD to pin a genre down, but if you have listened to any of his music, you would know how extremely hard it is to compare or categorize what this man is cooking up.

Halfway There showcases this weird style of Pop that Scuba has been crafting perfectly with this really surreal feel, crazy ... read more

Ethel Cain - Perverts
75

an unsettling sombre vibe, the tracks that are 12 minutes or longer are hard to stomach, but there's some slow and devastating beauty in a good few tracks with the vocals complimenting the soul crushing instrumentals really well. Very interesting listen.

Favourite songs : Punish and Vacillator.

Least favourite : Pulldrone.
