Courting really narrows their focus on this album to mostly indie rock. I wasn't a huge fan of Guitar Music, and I actually did enjoy this record more. Yet, the inexplicably autotuned vocals cannot hide how generic and typical the songs are.
Highlights: Throw, Emily G (which was too long for its own good), Babys, The Wedding
I think I'll always admire Ty Segall, but I don't think I've fully enjoyed an album / project by him since Freedom's Goblin or GØGGS.
Three Bells is a slightly more ambitious Ty record, but the goal here feels like... Ty Segall, but try to make it more dissonant, obtuse, tense, angular. In this respect, the album succeeds, and it isn't exactly a bad thing. It just ends up being a slog. Many of the songs aren't exactly pleasing to listen to. Part of me feels like the songs were ... read more
When Bending Hectic dropped, I couldn't help but be a little disappointed in the change of pace it seemed to signal, and over Nigel's absence. The subsequent singles also didn't help this - and don't get me wrong, they were all good songs, but it isn't what I really wanted from The Smile.
Still, this album does hold its own. I think the leaner runtime helps the more understated sound, and results in something more consistent and natural. The first album reaches some highs for me that this ... read more
Another one of those albums I've been meaning to listen to for over a decade - it's held up remarkably well for the most part, and I absolutely love Elizabeth Fraser's contributions. It does have that "edginess" that some late 90s music has that I'm not the biggest fan of, but the vibes on this album are potent.
Highlights: Angel, Risingson, Teardrop, Dissolved Girl, Black Milk
I can admire the musicianship these guys have, but man I did not enjoy this. Vocals are consistently the downfall of many of these songs. In general, it just does not sound good. The skill is there but the tone is not.
Highlights: guitar song, the killer (ft. michael fassbender)
Great production, forgettable songs. Just ends up feeling like an empty send off for PC Music.
I have been filled with the desire to be launched into space in a glass pod with nothing but this album playing
This is quite an album. I haven't heard anything else by The Dismemberment Plan, but have been meaning to listen to this album for years.
I tend to get nervous going into bands with emo and post-hardcore tags as that usually isn't my thing, but wow. While this album has traces of that sort of sound, otherwise it just lets itself go off the rails a bit, takes a lot of swings and rarely misses. Many songs manage to pull off ambitious instrumentals while still being catchy and high energy. ... read more
So far, early Swans has been a struggle to get through. Not bad, the band was pretty adept at creating a hostile atmosphere. Hoping I agree with the higher scores of their later stuff.
