Janet Jackson - janet.
93

A range of genres are explored on this album, including Pop, R&B, Funk, Soul, Rock, Hip-Hop, New Jack Swing, Quiet Storm, House and even a bit of Opera. This album has become the blueprint for female pop singers to explore female sexuality.

Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation 1814

A well-structured, solid concept album. This album proves that at her peak Janet could release some of the best pop music around.

Top 3 songs - Rhythm Nation, Miss You Much & Escapade
Least favourite song - The Knowledge

Janet Jackson - Control

This was the album that proved that Janet was a force to be reckoned with. Not a single bad song, but the singles do outshine the album tracks by a fair margin.

Top 3 songs - Nasty, What Have You Done for Me Lately & The Pleasure Principle
Least favourite song - You Can Be Mine

Madonna - Music
59

Never got the hype for this album. It sounds like a mixture of Ray of Light and American Life but without any of the high points of either album. "Music" is simply a snapshot of how Madonna's music was developing between 1998-2003, but it isn't a cohesive album on its own.

Top 3 songs - Runaway Lover, Don't Tell Me & Gone
Worst song - Nobody's Perfect

Gorgeous.

Top 3 songs - Drowned World/Substitute for Love, Frozen & The Power of Good-Bye
Least favourite song - Little Star

Madonna - Bedtime Stories

An album that took a while to grow on me, but when it did I learned to love it. A R&B album which serves as a companion to her previous album Erotica and is slightly smoother overall than that album.

Top 3 songs - Human Nature, Sanctuary & Bedtime Story
Least favourite song - Don't Stop

Madonna - Hard Candy

Madonna really lost her way on this album. There's a few good songs but the vast majority aren't anywhere near the level of her previous work. With this album, she becomes part of the pack instead of the leader.

Top 3 songs - Miles Away, Devil Wouldn't Recognize You & Voices
Worst song - Spanish Lesson

Madonna - Erotica
88

Madonna's most controversial. Despite the title suggesting an album full of sex, the songs actually cover a wide range of taboo topics, making it one of her most interesting albums. Sadly some songs like Bye Bye Baby and Did You Do It? drag the album down and could have been cut.

Top 3 songs - Deeper and Deeper, Bad Girl & Thief of Heart
Worst song - Did You Do It?

Madonna - Like a Prayer
92

Madonna develops her artistry on this album. Writing from a personal perspective as opposed to writing pop hits. This album was a turning point for Madonna, it proved that she wasn't going to disappear any time soon.

Top 3 songs - Like a Prayer, Till Death Do Us Part and Oh Father
Least favourite song - Act of Contrition

Madonna - Like a Virgin

The album that helped launch Madonna to pop icon status. It's got some great songs but also a fair bit of filler. It's the singles that really shine on this album.

Top 3 Songs - Material Girl, Into the Groove & Dress You Up
Least favourite song - Love Don't Live Here Anymore

Great album from start to finish. Yes I even like the last 2 songs, unlike most people.

Top 3 songs - Papa Don't Preach, Live to Tell & La Isla Bonita

Lady Gaga - Joanne

Nice change of direction. Gaga moves away from her dance-pop beginnings and decides to do a country/acoustic sounding album. This album has been a long time coming and I'm not a surprised at all that she would do an album like this. The funny thing is that many people wanted Gaga to get rid her 'gimmicks' on her previous albums, but now that she's released this album it seems that people want her to go back how she was! I guess she can't win.

This album is a bit of a mish-mash. Some parts good, some parts bad. But overall it's a decent album with enough eccentricity to make it interesting compared to most pop albums. Gaga's pretentious attitude back in 2012-2013 led to high expectations that were not met when the album was released. However if you leave the context behind you get a fun, crazy, over the top and occasionally reflective album. It seemed that Gaga's fashion sense was finally matching up with the style of her music.

I love this album. I really do.

I remember back in 2011 how polarising the reaction was. Some loved it, some hated it. I personally loved it because it took a different direction to her first 2 albums and it also felt crazier, weirder, more eccentric and most importantly more 'Gaga'. At times it's wonderfully weird, other times it's wonderfully personal. It also features a nice mixture of genres, it seems like Gaga threw everything she could into this album to create something that no other ... read more

A great album. No filler to be found and every song stands well on its own.

Cyndi Lauper - Bring Ya to the Brink

Really fun pop album. Cyndi delves into electronic/dance-pop music on this album and succeeds in creating an enjoyable album to rival any up and coming pop star of today.

Top 3 Songs - Echo, Set Your Heart & Rain on Me
Least favourite song - High and Mighty

Cyndi Lauper - Merry Christmas... Have a Nice Life

A cute album, but nothing astounding. "New Year's Baby" is a nice song written for her son who was 1 year old at the time

Top 3 favourite songs - Home on Christmas Day, Minnie and Santa & Silent Night

Cyndi Lauper - Sisters of Avalon
95

My favourite Cyndi Lauper album. Follows the same path as "Hat Full of Stars" but shows further artistic development. A great mixture of genres and themes. Not a single bad song on this album. Perhaps if this album had been successful with the mainstream back in 1997, people would take Cyndi more seriously.

Top 3 Songs - Ballad of Cleo and Joe, You Don't Know & Hot Gets a Little Cold
Least Favourite Song - Love to Hate

Cyndi Lauper - Hat Full of Stars
91

Criminally underrated. This album showed a different side of Cyndi Lauper that had not been seen very much in the 1980s. With this album Cyndi began to move into a more 'alternative' direction of music compared to her pop music days with her first 3 albums. 'Hat Full of Stars' explores topics such as Poverty, Racism, Domestic Abuse and Abortion. This is not an album most people would expect from her, or from any pop singer for that matter.

Sadly the album received very little support from her ... read more
