As a very casual New Order fan, Low-life was always the peak New Order album that I paid the least attention to. Perhaps it was the lack of a hit single or the unmemorable album art, but I simply gravitated towards albums like ‘Power, Corruption and Lies’ and evening ‘Technique’ without knowing any of the records well enough to make that sort of judgement. ‘Miss Anthropocene’ is easily the most disappointing album to be released in the first half of 2020. Frankly, no album has let me down so monumentally like this Grimes project has. To contextualize, with ‘Visions’ and especially ‘Art Angels’, Grimes created two of my favorite projects of the 2010s, and more recently, she has dropped fabulous singles like “Violence” and “We Appreciate Power”. To put it simply, New Order finds its stride on the group’s second album ‘Power, Corruption and Lies’. The heavy Joy Division influences that weighed down their debut album ‘Movement’ are gone in lieu of unique synth pop that New Order has since become prized for. Legendary new-age artist Enya’s ‘Watermark’ is an excellent yet somewhat typical new age record. The strings are well composed, the pianos are lush, and of course Enya’s vocal presence is as mystical as ever.

To get picky, as a vocalist Enya is not as active as she could and possibly should be throughout ‘Watermark’. “River”, as beautiful as it is, has no vocals which is somewhat disappointing. Enya’s voice is what separates her from her ... read more
