Damn this discography is consistent. I can see this album growing a bit and becoming a 100 somewhere down the road
Take the otherworldly atmosphere of I'll Try Living Like This but make it a hyperpop banger
The score I've given this album has nothing to do with my religious trauma from growing up in a Christian doomsday cult, don't think about it
Very very close to being a 10/10, I just can't get past "suckin on my ding dong"
Holy shit you guys, it turns out this Leonard Cohen dude is a really good songwriter??
It might not have the sheer amount of iconic songs that the debut had, but it's definitely on par in its quality. Just imagine a more compact and polished version of Are You Experienced? (even though the intro track is more experimental than anything that was on that album) and you'll get this. Another super fun album without a bad song in sight.
Completely on par with (if not better than) the debut. I was totally blown away by this album's consistently dreamy atmosphere and its handling of quiet-loud dynamics that keeps the flow going. If you want a more polished and condensed version of The Doors' sound without sacrificing any of the quality, I can't recommend this album enough.
I genuinely don't know how to rate this album because, like, the first six songs are indescribably great no matter how stupid the lyrics get because the instrumentals pull you in and make you feel everything that's happening even if you don't fully get it.
And then toward the end you get three songs (The Gnome, Chapter 24, The Scarecrow) that don't have super interesting instrumentals and don't feel nearly as adventurous as anything in the first half, so you're just left with mundane lyrics ... read more
A teeeeny tiny bit underwhelming at some points, but other than that it's exactly as cohesive and immersive as everybody says it is with some fantastic songwriting (on most songs) to back it up.
The fact that there's so many different versions of this album and all of them are sequenced differently and/or have different songs on it does kneecap the overall album flow a bit, but I can't deny that every song on every version of this album is fantastic. It might feel like a bit of a slog to listen to the hour long 17-track version in one go, but on an individual level you absolutely cannot go wrong with these songs.
If you want to hear a great Radiohead-type project that's all about meditating on the fact that the world might be kind of ending right now and we're all probably gonna die pretty soon, this is definitely the album for you
I'm so in love with this song, I really don't see why it's getting the reaction it is
Literally Yellow Submarine and the horn mixing on Got to Get You Into My Life are the only reasons this isn't a 100
I swear I could sum up 90% of albums released in the 50s and 60s by saying "yeah its sound is revolutionary and some of the songs are fantastic, but the label clearly told them to copy and paste the exact same song a few times to pad out the tracklist"
This is the first time I've every rated something as a 100 this soon after release, but considering I've been listening to this album over and over again since I first heard it in the middle of the night last Thursday, I feel like it's warranted.
While it might not be my personal favorite of all time, I think you could make a strong case that Pet Sounds is the greatest album of all time. Not only is it flawless from front to back, but its appeal is just so universal. It's adventurous and weird, but still easily digestible. The vocal melodies are unbelievably sweet, and the harmonies are iconic for a good reason. It simultaneously appeals to fans of rock, pop, and indie, while still having a sound uniquely its own that doesn't feel ... read more
It's a gay garage rock opera. What more do you want?
