I put this off for ages as it was two hours long and I really haven't liked The Beatles or their discography that much. I am glad I was finally in the mood to listen to this and ignored my reservations because this was absolutely brilliant, one of the best albums I've heard in ages.
This is intense and overwhelming. It's loud, chaotic and not easy to follow. However, because it's so different, it's a good cognitive exercise if you are in the mood. It will almost certainly get you used to new sounds and broadens the taste. Even if you don't end up liking or loving this much, it's good to try something way out of your comfort zone. I doubt I would have liked this at all 300 albums ago but I actually enjoyed the overall experience, despite thinking ... read more
The Rough Trade label is great. You can't beat the feeling of hopping on the train and into the city to visit Rough Trade. It's the freedom, the independence, the possibility, the adventure, the chance to browse vinyl and if you are lucky, to have a few lagers and something to eat. It's an event. You go somewhere that gets you. It's beautiful and romantic. And this is a very solid album.
54 wonderful minutes of wit, charm, charisma and provocation

The sound was production was very good. Unfortunately, the vocals were distant, thin and sounded like an emphysema patient. I prefer other shoegaze projects.
I was going to rate this 81 or 82. I enjoyed the melody, rhythm and percussion but felt it could have been more cathartic. It was a little low and really would have been benefited from some crazy moments. I still think that, but the final three songs were really strong and salvaged my overall impression of the album. Before, I was going to conclude by saying it felt a little hollow but I now think that would be unfair. The end of the album was really good.
I'm ashamed to say that I didn't like this too much initially because it's become one of my most played albums. It's dramatic, pretty, operatic, entertaining. She is ridiculously talented. Here, I was just impressed that she could switch between Spanish and Italian then when I researched, I must have been listening with my ears closed because there's like 13 or 14 different languages that I didn't even notice. There's nothing at all to dislike. Of recent ... read more
A quiet and intriguing album exploring love as a collection of moments. It's very relaxing and nostalgic, but with some lovely textures and arrangements. There is emotional nuance, it is intimate and the pacing is just right. Beautiful songwriting.
I went into album by that pop rebel with neon attitude expecting bold energy and it delivered. The track lineup lean hard into hyper-pop and club vibe, with heavy beat, bright tone, and a kind of chaotic charm that feel very intentional. It remind me of late-night party energy, glitter, and a bit of irony all rolled into one.
Vocal work feel playful yet controlled, and the production go all-in on maximal flair. It not trying to be deep or reflective, it know exactly what it want to be, and it ... read more
Yep.
It's rich, mature, full bodied, smooth, a little velvety, a little seductive, and unquestionably of luxurious quality.
I'm always a fan of an album where the singer can't sing but they have a damn good go at it anyway. Music without lyrics is just awful.
Now, this chap can't sing at all but he has a produced a very good album. His command of melody, rhythm and percussion is superb. The music twitches/glithes a little and is very bold despite the rhythm being intricate and delicate.
Technically speaking, his voice is terrible. Nonetheless, it's a lovely project.
You can't tell me that this is one of the highest-rated albums on the site. Some of the synth is tidy, which is the best I can say about the music. The best of part the album wasn't even a song, it was the Facebook Story, which made me smile. But what else was there? His voice was irritating. The music was boring, no structure, no nothing. There were a couple of bits where music threatened to play, then it didn't. At one point it sounded like a child striking chords on a novelty ... read more
It's fairly explosive in places and there's a little rhythm in there. I like her use of short declaratives as lyrics, it creates good pacing.
However, being real for a moment, this is an album for teenagers. There's no real depth, substance or complexity to it, it's just very noisy. It's a little fun, but that's all. I'm expecting the user score to drop significantly but let's see.
A lot of the songs start off slow, then they burst into life. They almost could be two songs because yhe arrangements are so distinct. It's a double-edged sword because on the one hand it can feel like you are waiting around a lot for the music to go, and the 1 hour and 4 minutes could have been shorter.
On the other hand, when it does play, you anticipate it and it's undoubtedly some of the highest quality music you'll ever hear. It's a little experimental, his voice is ... read more
I much prefer this sound of The Smiths. It's aggressive, rhythmic and a little groovy.
The guitar work was raw, jagged and abrasive.
There is some good song writing, with memorable lyrics.
The lyrics are depressing, but the music itself wasn't depressing. It was interesting.
The user score on this one is unfairly depressed due to the slogans about meat and everyone having an opinion about Morrissey/The Smiths.
If you don't judge it through that lense, the quality is ... read more
The trombones are excellent. They lock into those tight melodic lines with absolute precision, and the whole arrangement feels structurally perfect to my ear. The first three tracks are executed with real discipline and intent. The fourth dips in energy, but not enough to undermine the experience. Overall, it's a confident display of craft from two artists who knew exactly what they were doing. Pop a bottle red for this one; it's intellectually luxurious and deserves to be enjoyed ... read more
This isn't an easy album for me to rate. I don't like dense structures and there's a few bits, such as the long song, where nothing happens. It's also not the kind of album I could imagine coming back to, there's not much rhythm or groove. That said, I must still acknowledge the awesome quality of sound production. Even if it's not to my taste, it was anxiety-inducing in places and explosive throughout. The standard of artistic quality, especially on the sound ... read more
