Cortex you beautiful French bastards!
What an album this is, the symmetry of the notes is delicious, it's a little twinkly and pretty but not too much, with a light sprinkling of percussion which complements it lovely. Oh yeah and don't forget the groove.
This is the kind of album which deserves that you sit in your armchair with a large glass of fine French red. You have to let the flavours wash over your palate while you listen to Tropeau bleu. If anyone tries to interrupt you, ... read more
Having adored PJ Harvey's 90s and very early 2000s outputs I was hoping for another dose of expertly raw guitar riffs, emotionally flammable shouting and distorted sounds. Instead, I got something closer to a history seminar delivered via the medium of a folk album. It was almost a national inquest, but not a rock album.
History did you say? I'm in.
Once you tune into the lyrics, the historical references are everywhere: World War I, Gallipoli, the Dardanelles, the churned ... read more
BRAT was such an incredible vibe. Probably it's unfair to expect anyone to hit those heights in every production, it was an outlier and this album is a victim of those expectations.
Here Charli has done a nicely executed album, it's great to see an artist's taste develop and explore different genres.
However, the crucial quality it has lost is its identity: BRAT, it was a thesis, a cultural statement piece, a mic drop. Here, we know what the album is, but it's not as ... read more
No.
There are some tidy arrangements of sound. That's it, there's no vocals, I'm not swept away in a sonic storm. It's bland- up there with the most boring albums I've heard
A joyous two and a half hour celebration of the wonderful Patti Smith. I know it's a compilation but her music is banging on this; the punk sound, the production and her voice coalesce into that glorious and distinguishing sound that we know her for. Loved the cover of When Doves Cry. Fun, versatile, engaging.
What a queen.
Tori Amos isn't one of my favourite, top listened to artists. Her vocals have a little flavour I am unsure about.
BUT it is incredibly refreshing to listen to an artist who plays with direction, creates grand and dramatic sequences and has complete conviction in her own skills. Good album.
One of my favourite scenes is from the film Office Space where that fella is listening to gangster rap on his way to his boring office job; that's the energy I was channelling listening to this on the way to work this morning.
It gets your head nodding, really good album. The value is not in the production, it's the vibe.
Fun fact: one of the fellas from the clan apparently plays Cheese in The Wire. Not my favourite character though, that'd have to be Stringer or Omar
Favourite of this batch of albums I've listened to with some fun and enjoyable grooves. I have been impressed by all the Nick Drake stuff I've listened to so far.
I like Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights and Bloc Party - Silent Alarm. I also enjoyed some work by The National. So I found this by following the producer on all of them, Peter Katis, convinced I might find the next hidden gem. Unfortunately, this was nothing, there's a reason there are no reviews. He must have needed the work.
Time for a rethink.
Preferred Juju but only just. This went on a little longer than it probably should have, but also I tapped my foot a fair bit.
Goes a little more than expected. Preferred it to the banana one.
Recognised more tracks here than I thought I would. Beats seemed to come in with good umph
The Misfits are following a simple mantra here with Static Age: sometimes it's fun to just smash the instruments.
Okay, it's a little one dimensional, every song sounds the same and much before 35 minutes you'd heard the full range of what was on offer.
But I can certainly get behind the idea of playing horror/punk rock at a fast pace.
A likeable if limited album.
I listened to this while taking the dog for a walk. It's a pleasant and fun album, with gentle rhythm. There's not much to criticise, it's a solid good. It kept me interested and maintained my attention, but it doesn't do enough to reach the top scores in my opinion.
