HELL YEA. I love going into some of these albums blind bc OVT hit me and left me spinning in the greatest way possible. jazz?? what kind, i’m not sure. contemporary maybe?? however the fuck you want to define it, i don’t care, it’s just a butt load of fun and energy. Milena tells stories through her instrumentation. By SELF LOVE, i was very literally crying. I was out on a walk in my neighborhood and started actually crying because it was such a gorgeous swell of emotions ... read more
Here's the thing. I respect the hell out of being a girl garage band in the 90s - very cool. However, it's just not for me. It's something I know I'd love seeing live and being in the moment for, but nothing really stuck with me. But that's not because it's bad! It's just not for me. Still VERY fun!
Dreamy, poppy, soft and light like soft serve ice cream on a warm summer night. I was actually pretty preoccupied my first listen, but I was periodically pulled back into the album since I liked so many of the songs.
A lot of the reviews I'm seeing about this album are saying it's good but not as good as their first album? I guess I have to go listen to that now, but since this is their first project that I'm listening to, I think this is a really great stand-alone album.
Really well constructed album! Her vocals are gorgeous and while I wish more of the songs stuck out to me, I also think not every album has to be ground breaking. This is just a solid, pleasant listen. Y’all know I’m sappy so my fave was Your Love.
This album feels like it was made by a friend of mine in college and I’m so proud of her! Unfortunately, Im not actually friends with ChloTheGod, but I think it’s more that the album is good but she still needs some maturity as an artist.
Yessss this is what I’ve been waiting for!! Her voice is precious, I think I’d cry if I heard it live. Spanish was made for this genre of music!! I didn’t love the songs where she threw in auto tune (why did you do that Mon?), but otherwise there’s so much charm and magic stuffed in this 52 min album. Long, but a joy!
Sometimes it’s Nick Drake, while other times Brian Wilson’s and even once David Byrne? Not the most cohesive album and there’s definitely a few songs i prefer way more to others (gotta echo how great Miffed It is), but the songs i liked i loved.
SUCH a solid debut album WOW. Many very good songs, bringing back that 90s smooth rnb production.
This album excites me for what’s to come from Halima! I love the slower ballads just as much as I love the more upbeat poppy/club songs. Oops is so fun and I need to hear it on the dance floor IMMEDIATELY.
(I really respect Florence and the Machine so I feel mean and saying this and I won’t say this loud but I didn’t love this. It felt kind of corny in lyricism? It’s definitely for someone, jist not for me)
Japanese experimental rock from the late 60s? Maybe not my favorite but definitely interesting to say the least.
I was like “wow this sounds like Jungle” and wouldn’t ya know, it’s 2/3 of Jungle. Still some good stuff in here - I especially liked In Your Arms and Tokyo Rain - and generally a pleasant listen, but nothing really that I can’t wait to queue up next time someone makes the mistake of giving me aux
I feel like a bad person if I say anything negative about APL because i’m such a fan, BUT this isn’t my favorite of hers. It’s still sweet vocals and thoughtful lyrics, but most of the songs felt a little flat and felt too similar to the last. There are some good acoustic albums that still bring in some range (ie. any Nick Drake album), and I think that’s what I was wanting. Throw in a mandolin or a cello, still keep it acoustic but add some depth. I would pay APL to go ... read more
This probably deserves another listen because I was doing some distracted listening, but I don’t think much stood out on this album. That’s not to say this isn’t a good listen! It’s still really pleasant! It’s just the only song that did make me lock in was My Love.
I wasn’t feeling it until High Priestess got me feeling some type of way. I don’t think Santigold makes music to fit within a genre, and I’m happy they don’t. One of my biggest issues lately has been that artists are making albums where all the songs kind of sound the same, and i do NOT have that issue with this! Shake made me feel good and there were a few songs that are the kind of quirky fun that makes me want to use my over-ear headphones.
I can’t tell if this was actually only okay or if I was just not in a good mood on my first listen. I think it would only be fair to give it another listen but I kind of felt it was underwhelming. I don’t know a lot from this band so I don’t have much to compare it too, but as a stand alone I think it’s just fine. I like Send Nudes!
