Bore - Feral

Literally did a double-take because I thought I accidentally hit play on an Every Time I Die album. I mean this in the most complimentary way possible. While I hope that this band can distinguish itself from its obvious influence with future releases, this is an extremely solid album and deserves a listen, especially for those who, like myself, miss ETID.

The Callous Daoboys - I Don't Want to See You in Heaven
100

Somehow, I Don't Want to See You in Heaven manages to be both more and less approachable than Celebrity Therapist. It feels like the perfect combination of what has come before with all of The Callous Daoboys' influences on open and proud display while, at the same time, they have never sounded more like themselves. This album goes hard when it needs to and slows down to hit you with tenderness at all the right times, and, despite the impressive genre gymnastics all over this thing, ... read more

Orgone - Pleroma

yeeeeeeeeeeeesh this is a slapper

Fit For An Autopsy - The Nothing That Is
90

Genuinely floored by the quality of this and the consistency of these guys. They keep getting better. Literally leaps and bounds ahead of anybody else in “mainstream” deathcore 💀

Memorrhage - Anyo
85

More cohesive and overall even more interesting than the first Memorrhage album which was already great in its own way! Highly recommend for any of you who are little nu-metal freaks like me.

Mamaleek - Vida Blue
100

Incredible stuff. Mamaleek really outdid themselves!

Very possibly my AOTY.

Ulcerate - Cutting the Throat of God
90

Ulcerate just cannot miss in my book. Stare into Death and Be Still definitely hit me on more of an emotional level, but this might as well just take the Death Metal of the year cake right now.

SeeYouSpaceCowboy - Coup de Grâce
85

This sounds like nostalgia but a breath of fresh air at the same time. It’s really clicking for my brain. I’m a teenager again and it’s not a phase mom!

Knocked Loose - Don't Reach For Me

Good fucking lord this album is going to be hard af

meth. - SHAME

fuck.

fallingwithscissors - the death and birth of an angel

as an old ass who has been listening to metalcore for like 20+ years, I gotta say that new metalcore shit nowadays really f*ckin slaps bro

Ὁπλίτης [Hoplites] - Παραμαινομένη [Paramainomeni]
90

Easily my favorite album from this project yet! The heavy lean toward prog metal just works (those unhinged saxophone licks oof), and it's the cleanest Ὁπλίτης has sounded so far which just makes this so interesting and worth repeating.

花冷え。 [HANABIE.] - 来世は偉人![Reborn Superstar!]
90

A genuine improvement in every way over the (already great) Girl's Reform Manifest- definitely the fun summer metalcore bangers I needed!

Theophonos - Nightmare Visions
80

Current ratings on this are a sin. Everything I love about Mirror in Darkness with even sharper chaotic hardcore fangs. My body was not ready!

The unique artwork for each track is a nice touch too.

Ὁπλίτης [Hoplites] - Ψευδομένη

The first great album of 2023 is here and it's only the first week of the year!

This is a spawn of the sort of beauty through ugly dissonance thing that I love about projects like Serpent Column and the recent works of Plebian Grandstand but with a very definite "deathened" approach instead of the blackened mathcore you find in the aforementioned's discography. It leads to the most hideously destructive, but riffy and catchy poop-your-pants-fest I've heard in a hot minute.

On tiagoaon's review of MIRAR - Ascension
"Saying something is fascist music is a serious accusation, and clearly, nobody else has any knowledge of this. So, if you actually care about it, you really do have to justify it, and if you actually do care about it, it should be no problem to provide receipts so everyone else knows to steer clear of this band, right? If you're not willing to do that, it's pretty obvious why people would assume you are just cynically baiting for engagement. And, if that's the case, it sure is working lmao"

On Deathspell Omega - The Long Defeat
"@Bathonhead didn't say you were defending Aspa--read again. You are, however, defending the platforming of Aspa which is what DSO is doing. And I actually do think that it is super important to go ahead and point out a nazi when you see a nazi if you are anti-fascist. Despite whatever you might think, metal is becoming more and more popular lately, and I'm sure there are plenty of people who might see others hyping this album up and not know anything about DSO. So, yeah, I'm going to take some action to let those people know there's a nazi here so they can think before they stream. I never even specifically called you or anyone out, and I had no intent to. You're the one who came here ready to fight tooth and nail for the platforming of a nazi pedo."
On Deathspell Omega - The Long Defeat
"Really exhausting how hard some so-called politically "left" folks will go to defend the platforming of a fascist creep."
On Deathspell Omega - The Long Defeat
"I mean at the end of the day, sure DSO as a whole isn't a Nazi band, but they have taken a look at the open Nazi that they collaborate with and decided that it doesn't matter enough for them to find somebody else. They've shrugged at the literal Nazi in their midst. Ultimately, the fact that DSO doesn't care enough about it empowers Aspa to keep on being the piece of shit he is comfortably, and DSO is empowered to not care because they remain one of the more popular metal bands despite the Nazi (and child predator, this part seems to be forgotten too often) that they platform. Collectively, fans of black metal have shrugged at and accepted the presence of Nazis while I would prefer we lived in a world where Nazis were afraid to show their true colors for the consequences it would mean for them."
On Deathspell Omega - The Long Defeat
"yes, Nazis exist and will continue to exist in fringe music genre scenes, but that doesn't mean we should accept them in our spaces or be cool with people in those scenes elevating their voices. The fact that people care so little about the presence of Nazis is exactly what empowers Nazis to exist in the first place. I hope one day you realize this and start to care."
On Deathspell Omega - The Long Defeat
"lmao “Nazis and child predators are bad.” “So?” Quite an enlightened take. Thank you."
