Sparklehorse - Good Morning Spider
96

This sounds like what would happen if youd’ve gotten early Phil Elvrum on antidepressants and caffeine . It’s an extremely unique mix of influences, American folk, the grungy, alternative rock and butt rock/guitar pop bands that dominated the radio of the time, and indie singer sing writer balladry, just absolutely stunning diversity of pallet. When they mix these palletes a sound emerges that is, in my mind, owned truly by this record alone, completely unique. Despite the fact ... read more

Bleak and beautiful stories, which feel so infinitely timeless and personal. Elevated by the stripped back solo composition lanker thrives within the personal nature of a record like this, and an incredible sense of intimacy emerges.

My New Band Believe - My New Band Believe
94

This is more critically acclaimed than any Black Midi project, let that sink in, Picton has outdone himself and evolved to continue to be a leader in the windmill scene

Hozier - Unreal Unearth
49

Bro you changed

Hozier - Wasteland, Baby!
66

An extremely generic album which loses the lyrical richness and character of his first, and tries to make up for it by being even more pop than ever. Really disappointing follow up to an album that showed potential for growth, I’ll always be left to wonder what might’ve happened had Hozier not blown up we might’ve gotten a masterpiece or two out of him, but as it stands this is 14 consecutive attempts to be a 2 hit wonder

Hozier - Hozier
71

A hit and miss album honestly, filled to the brim with personality but falling consistently back to derivative tropes. Overall Hozier admittedly brings a little bit more than an overproduced album with a YouTube hit, but it’s lyrically shallow and sonically uniform and predictable.

Ratboys - Singin' To An Empty Chair
94

Blatant Sleater Kinney worship. These guys aren’t trying to hide it at all. It’s Sleater Kinney in a 2026 costume, but a hell of an imitation of “The Woods” which is an absolute 10.

Also: Me when AOTY hates music that’s produced in high fidelity and by women 😔

James Blake - Overgrown
100

Special album, beautiful, production, songwriting, composition, and performance by a genre defining artist. Definitely the greatest Post-Dubstep album of all time

James Blake - Trying Times
99

I was so worried going into this album, because how many times do you see artists “going solo” and completely changing a formula that works, but now it’s clear that the label was forcing Blake to stay accessible and poppy, now he can make all these pretentious intricate post-dubstep IDM style compositions which pull strings out of your brain, and the songwriting is so raw 😭 just such raw shit bro. FAV TRACK: Rest of your life Worst track: Didn’t come to argue.

Renatto Olivares - Aguas Raras
89

Bangers, they’ve certainly got the composition part down

Zach Bryan - With Heaven On Top
82

There are some albums, that “justify their length“, and there are others which don’t, with a project like this, you can’t think of listening as a chore, Zach Bryan creates a world which only gets more lush and vivid the longer you spend inside of it, throwing this on as I drive down the highway in the middle of nature amplifies the beauty of the rolling plains, and the longer I spend immersed the more I look forward to the next minute

Richard Sallis - Casino
94

The National but British, this sounds so much like the national it’s ridiculous. … But the national is one of my favorite bands of all time, and Salas uses the style to tell his own stories, some of which I really connected to. don’t let the obscurity fool you, this album is a classic.

Mt. Joy - Rearrange Us
94

Animal collective if they actually went mainstream.

Panda Bear - Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper
96

They really turned Brian Wilson into a cyborg 😭

Rush - Moving Pictures
100

Came because I watched a Vsauce video about this album cover being a triple entendre and stayed because HOLY SHIT THIS IS FIRE

(They wanna be squid so bad)

The La's - The La's
99

While maybe not as intricate or powerful as other parts of the Jangle Pop scene this album is chalked full of beautiful strings and goes down smooth. And the lyricism rivals that of Stipe or Morrissey. Easily one of the greatest jangle pop albums of all time.

Battles - Mirrored

This is one of the greatest albums of all time, and set the way for the majority of the experimental indie scene. Without battles we don’t get Black Midi or Turnstile or any of the other mathy proggy shit you listen to. Respect your elders. (Gloss Drop is even better than this by the way)

Theyre so… back?

ROSALÍA - LUX

Kinda music that makes me wish I spoke Spanish.

On Raci3r's review of James Blake - Trying Times
"No beef, but it’s so so so gut wrenching and disappointing to see people talk about James Blake and say “the Frank ocean style of music”. If you google “artists that James Blake influenced” Frank ocean will be on that list. James Blake broke onto the scene in BBC sound of the summer in 2010 and his debut Pioneered the style of electronic R&B, I would highly recommend listening to his self titled which is better than Channel Orange."

"Hey! I saw your review of both Air Con Eden and this new record and I agree that these are underrated and underestimated works, that being said, 100 and 95 is a little rich for my blood lol, I’m working through these and am curious what you’re listening for and hearing in these albums that set them a tier above. These albums reminded me really strongly of super ambient post punk revival stuff (Something like The Twilight Sads: “Nobody wants to be here and nobody wants to leave”) But it’s more laid back pop than rock."
