ANIMAL COLLECTIVE DEEP DIVE (EPs) #21: LONG TITLE I DON'T FEEL LIKE TYPING

Beautiful set of unreleased tracks from their STGSTV era.

The last thing I'd expect is a band like AnCo covering "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac. I always appreciate the covers that are completely unique from the original song, which I honestly prefer over straightforward covers.

THATS ALL FOR THE EPs YAAAAAAAY. Now on to each member's solo works.

(P.S. Jesus series like these take dedication holy ... read more

Animal Collective - Bridge to Quiet

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE DEEP DIVE (EPs) #20: BRIDGE TO QUIET

This is a SLEPT ON project by AnCo in my opinion. One of their best EPs honestly. A level of immersion that's similar to their Fall Be Kind EP.

If that 3rd wasnt so unnecessarily lengthy, I would consider this one of their better projects.

(P.S. PLEASE ANCO KNOW WHEN TO END A SONG PLEAAASE)

Animal Collective - Meeting of the Waters
70

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE DEEP DIVE (EPs) #19: MEETING OF THE WATERS

Other than having a great opener and "Man of Oil" being one of my favorite songs of all time, the rest is paaaaainfully averaaaaaage and they are so looooooooong. Still decent though!

(P.S. I swear some AnCo songs would be so much better if some songs were shorter like oh my goodness dawg)

Animal Collective - The Painters EP
65

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE DEEP DIVE (EPs) #18: THE PAINTERS EP

This is legit just better Painting With...

You can slap 2 of Painting With's tracks somewhere in this EP and you have a pretty serviceable project.

As is, decent but my life remains unaffected by this.

(P.S. That DAMN back and forth effect RETURNS in this thing im SICK OF IT. Also I just realized my track ratings are so backwards compared to the rest of people's view lmao)

Animal Collective - Transverse Temporal Gyrus
75

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE DEEP DIVE (EPs) #17: TRANSVERSE TEMPORAL GYRUS

If the beginning of part 2 wasnt so CHEEKS maybe the score could be in the 80s...

Though I will say this is one of AnCo's more underrated ahd overhated projects. Its experimental and weird beyond belief yet it's so neat the amount of sounds crammed in here without being a sloppy mess. It's very new to me, I like it.

Again if part 2 didn't actually take FOREVER to go somewhere maybe this score will be higher. ... read more

Animal Collective - Keep + Animal Collective

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE DEEP DIVE (EPs) #16: KEEP

Damn who took Avey's mic again?

Simply a solo work compilation, it's just all the members having a song each.

Deakin clearly has the best song here with like no competition. Its an ok lil project i suppose.

(P.S. seriously check out that Deakin song its really friggin coool)

Animal Collective - Fall Be Kind

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE DEEP DIVE (EPs) #15: FALL BE KIND

I kid you NOT, this might be my favorite EP out of all EPs I've EVER HEARD.

To be honest I've probably only heard like 3 EPs before this series BUT THATS BESIDES THE POINT. Call me crazy but I think this project is even better than a majority of AnCo's full length LPs. There's so much life packed into this little thing, it's genuinely impressive.

For a while this was actually in my top 4 albums at the top of my page ... read more

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE DEEP DIVE (EPs) #14: WATER CURSES

I honestly dont have much to say about this album 😭. I mean the first half is good and the second half is decent-ish. Thank you for your time!

(P.S. Uhhhhhhh)

Animal Collective - People
70

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE DEEP DIVE (EPs) #13: PEOPLE

Can somebody go back and time and kick a rock so Avey Tare can be a UG rapper? He was lowkey SPITTIN in "Tikwid".

It's just a worst "Feels" pretty much. Even though "People" is its own stand alone project, I think of it as Feels outtakes. Still decent though!!!

(P.S. I listened to all their EPs in like a day so the EPs are gonna be a lightning round.)

FÉRINA - We're One Short
90

Ay shoutout to @FÈRINA for sending me this track. I actually liked it a helluva a lot more than expected!!!

The nice ambient and relaxing production goes GREAT with the vocals. Excited to see more from this project for sure dawg!

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE DEEP DIVE #12: PROSPECT HUMMER (EP)

OoooOOoOoooOOo we starting off STRONG for the EPs hell yuh!

It's a very short and sweet project with great vocals provided by Vashti Bunyan. I missed the folkier sounds from them during this dive🥹

(P.S. "Its You" is HEAVEN on EARTH)

Animal Collective - Isn't It Now?
75

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE DEEP DIVE #11: ISN'T IT NOW?

22 MINUTE SONG WTF???!!

Thank goodness Animal Collective's longest song (under the AnCo name that is) "Defeat" is the best song on this album because I was DREADING listening to it lmao. But I'm glad I showed patience for it.

As for the album itself, I put it in the same pool as their previous album "Time Skiffs" with a lot of crossover with themes both lyrically and sonically, and that more ambient approach. ... read more

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE DEEP DIVE #10: TIME SKIFFS

This is one of the few projects in AnCo's discography that I had zero clue of what to expect going into it, outside of "Prester John" being one of their better songs in their modern era. Not only is "Prester John" top 20 AnCo for SURE, but this might be one of their more underrated albums, in my opinion.

I appreciate the calmer, more ambient direction, stripping back from their experimentation and honing in on the art ... read more

Animal Collective - Painting With

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE DEEP DIVE #9: PAINTING WITH

This might be my least favorite Animal collective STUDIO album.

A cool pattern I've been noticing in AnCo's discography is that literally all of their albums have such strong openers (except for like Campfire Songs or something). Like Floridada is such a catchy BOP, especially compared to the rest of this album.

I just found myself really bored throughout the whole listen. And that DAMN BACK N FORTH EFFECT WITH THE VOCALS. Its cool for ... read more

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE DEEP DIVE #8: CENTIPEDE HZ

I really wanted to enjoy this album and call it a hidden gem like the other AnCo fans, but to be honest, I didn't have a fantastic time with this.

Don't get me wrong, I think tracks like "Moonjock" and "Today's Supernatural" are some of my personal favorite songs by them, and I love the fact that Deakin has a chance to provide vocals for "Wide Eyed", which was a nice change in pace. But the second half ... read more

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE DEEP DIVE #7: STRAWBERRY JAM

First off, I absolutely adore how this album is from start to finish. It is by far Animal Collective's most fun and energetic albums so far. There is not a SINGLE aspect of this album that falls short of just being a blast to listen to.

Something I've failed to mention during this deep dive series is Avey Tare's INSANE vocal range and how quickly he can switch between the styles. It especially shines the most on this album, where ... read more

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE DEEP DIVE #6: FEELS

I've never considered an album to be top 5 this quickly before.

I've noticed recently that a lot of the albums I've reviewed haven't stuck with me on the very first listen, even those I've given a really high score to. But somehow, this immediately clicked for me on a level I haven't felt since Burial's "Untrue", possibly.

The first time I heard Feels was a couple of months ago, when I wasn't super ... read more
