It's a pretty good instrumental noise pop EP. I think I would have liked this more as a more diverse EP with multiple shorter tracks instead of two long ones however. The two long track format still works though.
Well, that was disappointing. Without a doubt Aphex Twin's weakest album, pretty much every track here sounds the same, just like another certain release of his I also gave a 5/10. My favorite track in this album is "aisatsana", not because it's significantly better but just because it's something different after an hour of the same acid techno beats.
And to think I thought "Endtroducing....." was the pinnacle of plunderphonics/instrumental hip hop. Even ignoring the music itself (which is great), the fact that every single track smoothly transitions from one to another and the amount of samples utilized is already admirable. As for the music itself, it's great, with plenty of memorable tracks like "Tonight May Have To Last Me All My Life", "Frontier Psychiatrist", and "Live At Dominoes".
An ambient/drone album. Doesn't stand out too much, besides Limited Space, which I really like.
A bit disappointing with how highly rated it is among some of my friends (two 10/10s), but still a good album. While baobab and albireo were underwhelming tracks, amane and blackbird made up for it.
I always wanted to listen to another C418 album besides Minecraft: Volume Alpha, just to see if all of his music was like that album. Looking back though this was a poor album to test that, considering it's a film soundtrack for a Minecraft documentary, but whatever. As for the content of the album itself, it's generally in the style of the tracks made for Minecraft: Volume Alpha except more refined this time around. While this may sound like a good thing, I liked the more simple piano focused ... read more
Sometimes I wonder why I even do these reviews. Is it because I want to keep consistent since I've done it for the past 14 albums I've listened to? Because I enjoy pouring my thoughts out into text? I'm not really sure. Maybe I should make these into a list on RYM as a sort of listener's journal instead of spamming the notifications box of my friends with reviews.
Anyway, about the album itself. While there's 4 tracks here, this album is definitely meant to be listened to in one sitting from ... read more
Post-rock that actually sounds pleasant instead of depressing. Probably one of those albums I'll always come back to when I'm not really sure what to listen to. Not much else to say.
Complex free improvisation rock. Not really sure what else to say about this really, all of the tracks are so similar there isn't really anything that stands out, and it doesn't exactly evoke any emotion either, at least for me. It's just complex free improv rock.
Why is this album not GYBE!'s most acclaimed release? It's way better than that album with the hands on the cover that I'm too lazy to type out the whole name of, in my opinion. While The Dead Flag Blues is a bit too dreary and dull for my taste, East Hastings and Providence more than make up for it.
That was okay, I guess? I'm not really an indie rock guy so I guess my apathy towards this is to be expected, but none of these tracks particularly stood out as "Wow, that was really nice". Still a pleasant listen, but not much to hold my interest.
A pleasant and unique listen, but one that's too lacking in energy for me to especially like it. Not really much else for me to say besides that.
Yeah, I don't get why so many people here hype this album so much.
There's nothing interesting instrumentally here, and the vocals are okay at best. I really don't care about whatever political message this album has, but I feel like that's the main reason this album gets praised so much. In conclusion, this album is probably the exact opposite of what I like. It's not an objectively bad album, I just don't like any track here.
Better than Loveless (That isn't saying much though). All of these tracks are alright, besides Glider. Bit too noisy and formless for me. Soon and Don't Ask Why are pretty good tracks, but not good enough to warrant me giving this any higher than a 6/10.
Just saying, this is most likely the most unfitting album name (And cover, at least the original one) ever. How the hell this is supposed to sound warm or summer-like is beyond me, it sounds more like a computer having an existential crisis than anything really. Unfitting titling aside, this album is fantastic. It executes its glitchy ambient concept very well, and there's no bad tracks on this album, though it doesn't have any major peaks as well.
Probably one of the strangest albums I've listened to. Simultaneously sounds far ahead of its time and tribal. Most of the tracks have a very ominous tone, with constant pounding drums and strange vocals. Doesn't have too much variation though, which is part of the reason it's only a 7/10 to me.
Soft ambient with female vocals. Not much special other than that, but it's a concept I like that's executed well enough, so it gets a good rating from me.
Damn, was I even listening to this album the first time I rated it?
Almost every track in this album is at the very least good, and incredible at best. The contrast between the soft vocals and distorted instrumentals that sometimes resemble walls of noise works wonders, and results in some very unique tracks. The only complaint I have with this album really is that the ending track is pretty underwhelming, at least outside of the context of the album.
