Jarvis was not even close to be the great performer He is today. The instrumentation is pretty basic and even predictable and the lyrics are on the same field, but “It” is from 1983!!! I mean the same year almost everything was sounding like crap. No super catchy synth sections, no electric drums, no happy chorus.

Overall produced competently and often pleasant instrumentally, you just can't help but feel as though this record is the sound of a band completely struggling to find their identity. It's alright, but the charisma, storytelling and overall aura of the Pulp of the 90s and beyond just isn't there, which makes complete sense as they would've been super young when they made this debut album. The instrumentals really stand out as brilliant here, however they do not hide the fact Jarvis Cocker sounds bad here.
