Metal Injection

Spiritual Instinct follows the blackened resurgence Kodama began—building upon it, slightly tipping the scales in black metal's favor. While, of course, maintaining Alcest's signature patina.

PopMatters

Everything that fans could want—and everything that makes blackgaze stand out—is contained within Alcest's Spiritual Instinct.

AllMusic

The end of the journey on Spiritual Instinct, while deeply satisfying, signals yet another beginning.

Kerrang!

Cult French blackgazers Alcest voyage through darkness into light on the astonishing Spiritual Instinct.

Exclaim!

Spiritual Instinct is likely Alcest's heaviest album to date, but it leaves a little to be desired.

Compared to 2016’s wonderful Kodama, Spiritual Instinct is an album that is embalmed in lighter tones and motifs, charmingly optimistic against Neige’s often morose themes.

Today I’m listening to my very favourite Blackgaze album, from the pioneers of the hybrid genre Alcest - Spiritual Instinct from 2019 in preparation for tomorrow’s “Blackgaze Friday” in which two of the biggest Blackgaze artists in the world Lantlos & Deafheaven both drop their latest innovation of the exciting and ever growing genre with new albums respectively.

If you’re O.K. with metal get around this!

Hyvältähän ne Ranskan pojat kuulostaa, mutta albumi ei tarjoa riittävän paljoa yllättäviä tai erityisiä hetkiä.
