Sadly, Charles Mingus passed before he was able to listen to this timeless and ageless paean to his remarkable contributions to bop and free jazz.

Mingus represents a brave attempted collaboration with the noted jazz bassist and composer; unfortunately, the results are sketchy at best.

Mingus, her 1979 collaboration with Charles Mingus before his death makes her seem like the jazz dilettante that people accused her of being. The ultimate result doesn't serve either of their legacies particularly well.

I'm not sure what to make of this one. It's even more daring than Joni's previous album, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, and I'd say it's the closest to experimental I've heard a Joni Mitchell album become. With that boldness comes the same flaws than its predecessor, though, which on many parts of this album become more glaring. it’s good cause it’s joni but it doesn’t live up to the legendary run that she had till don juan. I really want to complete her discography but i fear we are entering a dark age in joni’s journey

If Mingus had passed away a little later, giving them plenty of time to finish the album, I can't imagine how amazing it would have been😭😭😭

If you’re wondering where the source material comes from for the “crazy jazz lady” trope, it’s this.
