Much like Jenkinson’s home of Essex, his new album is cold, dark, uninviting, difficult and easily misunderstood
It's hard to dispute that Ufabulum find him in the form of his life.
Fans waiting for the true follow-up to 2001’s Go Plastic may now warm their souls by the heat of his hard drive.
Ufabulum rises out of the muddle of curious decisions on the several albums before it, offering a true-to-form Squarepusher experience more diverse and ornate than almost any before it.
Ufabulum abandons Squarepusher's usual 1 : 1 ratio of electronic : jazz in favor of 1 : 1, electronic : space adventure.
Part of the problem is tempo. Moments of Ufabulum, particularly the middle stretch, are all but impossible for me to remember after a dozen plays.
At 50 minutes, Ufabulum is a little exhausting and monotonous to be declared a masterpiece. But chunks of it are quite brilliant and exciting, so it's better to take it exactly as it is: a Squarepusher record, through and through.
This is Squarepusher with the best equipment money can buy, pumping his tracks mercilessly until they’re all surface and no substance.
Whilst undoubtedly, and commendably, experimental, very few tracks on Ufabulum hit their mark.
Ufabulum is perhaps not a terrible album in any respect, but at the same time it simply is an incredibly boring one.
This came out at the peak of "Brostep" with skrillex leading the gang. And i'm ashamed to say i assumed for way too long i knew what this album and artist was. I’m glad i was wrong
While it flirts with this era of dubstep, with extreme compression and sidechaining at parodic levels, we also get stuff that is just pure euphoric IDM. The second half especially is just NASTY good.
And one thing i want to point out is that this is completely 100% analogue. Which is so fucking ... read more
Meh. Ufabulum is the album where Squarepusher blends in his IDM sound with 2010s EDM??? And the results end up being VERY mixed. But what I must say though is that intro track really had me catfished bro this album never gets that good again even if Dark Steering is a solid track. Like the fact this album starts with the best track and then the following track is the worst on the album I just knew I was in for a mixed bag. I was just left largely unimpressed here and I really wish I ... read more
He watched that film about clones and got sad
If it was watch, then it would be named "Sckrollex Geks 10"
Crazy record, perpetrating Squarepusher's trend of placing the best songs at the beginning.
I think Tom manages to mostly successfully embrace the sounds of 2010s electronic trends and infuse them into his drill and bass universe here. The second half is where things really pick up and I found myself loving almost every track massively from the midpoint onwards.
