Janet strikes a solid balance between innovation and dependability, bridging past and future better than most—including her legendary sibling.
The album’s movements flow like natural metamorphosis rather than wild swings thanks to Jackson’s voice. Unbreakable finds her continuously rediscovering new crevices in her vocal range.
Unbreakable is the mature album, free of commercial ambition, her all-too-breakable brother never made.
Unbreakable feels like Jackson’s most timeless album.
Unbreakable is a synthesis of ideas Jackson’s collected and tested throughout her career.
It's a successful return for Ms. Jackson, a grown-ass album that refuses either to pander or wallow in nostalgia.
The best thing about Unbreakable is that it proves Janet can still surprise us.
Unbreakable is overall Jackson’s strongest album in a decade, a mature and nuanced career progression that sounds effortless.
Janet has calculatedly played the humble-grateful card countless times in her career, but Unbreakable, a ready-made collection of deep cuts, is one of the first times she's given a fully convincing performance.
Janet is reflective, optimistic, and offering encouraging, motivating lyrics to those listening. It’s the album I wish Janet made years ago.
Unbreakable is truly a reflective body of work in which Janet refuses to succumb to trends but remains true to what feels and sounds right.
No one but Jackson can directly reference previous triumphs, address her audience, and yet move forward quite like this.
Unbreakable nonetheless feels like the liveliest, freshest album we’ve received from Miss Janet in nearly 15 years, and one that feels like a genuine step forward for her artistically.
The chunky bass of Dammn Baby hits the dancefloor spot – but otherwise, Unbreakable’s highlights are low-key moments of reflection and nostalgia.
1,000th rating!
It's been a while since I reviewed a record specifically because I reached a milestone. I tried though as time went by but for each album, I struggled finding things to say. I eventually gave up on writing specifically at each 100th step reached. But 1,000 is too much of an important number to be overlooked. While I approached the number, I started to wonder which album could take the spot.
One album quickly came back in mind.

It's a fantasy to hear your favorite pop stars from the 1980s find their sound in the contemporary moment. We often think of older musicians regressing or just churning out the same old material. Artists trying to update their music tend to sound out of place in the updated production. Not Janet, Unbreakable is a delectable R&B record that delivers on its potential. Jackson's breathy vocals sound like they have been waiting for a little EDM for years. The music is sassy, energetic, and ... read more

this album is not good i fear, it’s very outdated & lackluster. none of the tracks are good or interesting sonically, except like maybe..3 songs that can be fun but are just alright. the ballads are boring and the production overall is just crummy. but what i find the most unpleasant is Janet’s voice; she sounds completely different and too much like Michael, which is very grating.

Honestly a return to form! I think a lot of people underestimate this album really just because it’s late in her career, but it really is quite good. The title track, take me away, the great forever are all so good! You can really tell she has nothing she has to prove and the tracks flow effortlessly.
I don’t really think Janet is gonna return to music after this, but she doesn’t need to honestly, this is such a great album to close her discography ... read more
