Opener "The Distorting Light" exhibits an exceptionally dark, eerie vibe that permeates the album and adds a new layer to Immolation's iconic sound.

Metal Injection
Immolation remains a constant and reliable source of capturing the essence of death metal.

Angry Metal Guy
To quote the album: β€œLower and lower, my soul is sinking lower,” but, by Lucifer, I fucking love it down here!

Metal Hammer

A masterclass from Yonkers’ standard-bearers.

Pitchfork
The new album from New York’s Immolation is a masterclass in death metal songwriting. It pairs a queasy feeling of gloom with melodies you can actually hum along to.

Consequence of Sound

Another installment of technical death metal with few compromises.

Immolation’s music has once again taken a familiar form, only to contort it so as to spell out your inescapable fate.

Vigna and Dolan have really done no wrong in their career, though they certainly hit their stride with 2000’s Close To a World Below. It’s a streak that, with this effort, remains unbroken

Atonement is absolutely a realization of the most updated version of that vision, and any reservations about the record can be chalked up to personal taste rather than objective quality.

"The Distorting Light" starts with a decent hypnotic little riff before thundering away, solid pacing and heavy riffs as well, I like the next passage as well, very sick groove and mini solo. Nasty harmonics as well, very pleasant start.

"When The Jackals Come" hits with a solo passage right away before the verses it, familiar but pleasant here. Solid riffing, I like the one around the minute mark before it goes for a chunky groove. Another great passage starts just before ... read more

"Incite us to keep us apart"
Top 4 Immolation.
Now I can see why the term "dissonant death" is thrown at them, if you listen closely the riffs sounds like they are spinning circle in the studio, other than that the drumming continues to be top notch.

It seems Immolation has finally started to engage with a little chaos again for the first time in years. After quite a lot of good but simple death metal, Immolation tries to tie their music back to their roots a little. Atonement still lack the innovation and creativity I expect from Immolation, but this is still more focused and chaotic than most of their later records. Enjoyable listen with good production, it's alright.

Another Reason Why Immolation Is The GOAT of Death metal

This genuinely might have some of Immolation's best riffs, the production makes them sound absolutely filthy, and the pinch harmonics really elevate some of these riffs to incredible heights. Other than that, this album is pretty much the same as the rest, clearly these guys found their formula, and stuck to it, which is absolutely fine, because that formula has blessed me with some of the filthiest fucking riffs and heaviest fucking songs I think I've ever heard.
