In both sound and lyric, Walker's music became more and more evocative, leaving behind the easy gratification of his earlier albums for broad, cinematic arrangements and stories that end not on punch lines, but question marks.

While the tension between the bloated production and his introspective, ambitious lyrics remains, much of the over-the-top bombast of the orchestral arrangements has been reined in, leaving a relatively stripped-down approach that complements his songs rather than smothering them.

Scott Walker has to be one of the more interesting figures in music history. He started in the commercial pop scene, with the Walker Brothers. Later in his solo career he etched out a place for himself, and put his own spin on Baroque Pop. But by far the most interesting aspect of his career, is his experimental phase. The music he created then was harrowing, even spine-tingling. I’d say this record is the definitive statement in his Baroque Pop era.

Genre: Baroque Pop

Can't tell if I like this album or not. It's like a constant stream of ups and downs. You have great choirs and strings one one song, but Scott sounds really disinterested and his singing and it kinda makes it boring, oh wait he can sing now! To bad it's only a guitar and his voice. Scott Walker's career has perhaps been one of the most intriguing...ever. Over five decades, the Ohio singer-songwriter traversed just about every area of music there is to explore. Shifting from contemporary 60s baroque pop - which is what he displays on this record - to the avant-garde in his later life, Walker was never one to shy away from really exerting his persona, and this album definitely reflects that. This record is perfect. And, as such, you might anticipate that it has influenced anyone and everyone who you think is good since. Sensational production and aural space is one of those elements that the world and his orchestrating dog has ripped off. The arrangements set the bar for modern music. It's filled with bangers, none of which repeat themselves and, as with all perfect things, you put it on... and you don't skip or turn it off until it's done with you.

Another exceptionally pretty album from Scott Walker, but I think 'Scott 3' did it better.
