May not be his best, but damn it’s good. Songs like TABOO and SIRENS really reach the depths of Zel’s heart and soul. It’s only through projects like these that we can truly understand artists. And it’s also really entrataining to see the differences between the three acts (all of which are equally amazing), Light, Dark, and Grey.
Best Song; SIRENS
Worst Song: MAD THAT I GOT IT
Never realized critics didn’t love this record. Every song is beautiful (yes even Intro and Hello). Skipless album and one of the best of its year. And yet, the critic score is 66? I guess this just shows the unjustness of the rap industry against J. Cole. He will literally get hated on for anything, despite making amazing music and seeming like the most humble guy ever. And people say he’s corny? Calling Cole corny is the only thing that’s corny. Anyways, rant over. I just ... read more
It’s boring.
And I hate when people say that about 4YEO, but this is just so boring.
This album is a go-to if you want to fall asleep instantly.
And, for other albums, that could be a compliment. For example, ELOWI by Yamê is one of my favorite albums, and I put it on to sleep because it’s just calming and relaxing.
But this? This is just boring.
Best Song: House of Balloons / Glass Table Girls
Worst Song: What You Need
“‘MUSTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARD!!!!!!”
- Kendrick Lamar, 2024
Best Song: reincarnated
Worst Song: dodger blue
Act a Damn Fool is probably the new worst song on the album, but with Zel's crazy consistency throughout it, its still a great song. The relisten to the old songs made me appreciate them a lot more, so I feel even more positive about this project now. All the new songs bar AaDF are downright incredible and some of the best on the album, so the reissue definitely benefited the album greatly. This is an incredible effort from Zel.
The tracks aren't bad. In fact, I think almost all of them are a 7/10. But its impossible to ignore that Westide Gunn doesn't sound very inspired in this album, and DJ Drama really makes most of the songs worse. Not unlistenable, just more like… I'm not waiting until I get home to bump any of these songs. They're not bad, its just there's no standouts. The actual standouts are the Title Track and Underground King, but even then they're just 8-9/10 songs. ... read more
Lil Tecca has put out, honestly, an incredible project. In the best way possible, every song on this album sounds like one. That doesn't mean that it gets boring; the opposite completely, the coherence of this album is honestly amazing. It feels like it is one, really big song that conveys all the emotions that Tecc wanted to convey throughout the album. The beats are just different enough to be different songs, but they are so similar that when you think of this album you have a very ... read more
Freddie Gibbs, as always, puts out a great project that has a lot of replayability, especially when you play the album as a whole. It provides a chiller version of Freddie, something I've always wanted from his catalog. Freddie is clearly great at rapping over mellow beats, as shown by all the songs except Status, the only skip on this entire album.
Best Song: It's Your Anniversary
Worst Song: Status
Lupe can rap. We know this: he's likely the greatest rap lyricist of all time (if we're talking pure bars). He also has a great rapping ability, always knowing how to flow across a beat super smoothly. But, one part of Lupe's artistry that is overlooked is his incredible sonical talent. And damn, does he show that in this album. Not only does he deliver on his superb rapping strengths, but he has an immaculate beat selection with a great choice of vocalists and very well-made ... read more
The greatest album of all time, don't talk to me. Written, produced, and performed (both instrumentally and vocally) by the greatest artist of all time, which he made while he was BLIND and 26 YEARS OLD in just TWO YEARS while RAISING HIS FIRST CHILD, a daughter who was just a year old when this was released.
Overall incredible album. However, there are 4 songs that tower above the rest of them, making a lot of them forgettable even if they would be standouts in most other albums. Those 4 songs aer half manne half cocaine, palmolive, giannis, and education— especially palmolive and education. Both tracks feature iconic incredible Madlib production and amazing Freddie verses, but also each include 2 features from 2 different rap legends that all deliver verses that are grammy worthy. The Push ... read more
I don't give a fuck people call this corny. This is the smoothest of all smooth jazz albums and has two of my favorite songs of all time: Winelight and Just The Two of Us. The saxophone presented by Grover Washington Jr. is unmatched by anything I've ever heard, he went OFF. Not a single second on this album is wasted and that's crazy when all of your tracks are over 5 minutes and over half of them are over 6. There's no critiques I have of this album, every track ... read more
Outkast is the greatest rap act of all time. I feel there is no debating that. And this is by far their most ambitious and experimental project, pushing the needle to spaces where they had never pushed it before. And this is the same group that made Aquemini, which brought Conscious rap and Southern rap to the mainstream of hip hop. After each album, Outkast completely reworked their soundscape and themes. Yet, nothing in their catalog can match the change in style that Stankonia brought to ... read more
Super focused, high energy, short, and high quality song after another. I do wish he did more chill and late night meant songs on this album, because the two there are (Wish and speedboat) are definitely my two favorites. However, I still love the high energy and hype songs like Zuu that just get you jumping in the air. Then there's the incredibly aggresive songs like P.A.T., which I also think are incredibly. In just 29 minutes, Zel manages to make perfectly executed rap songs of all ... read more
Definitely Earthgang's best project. The songs are all beautiful. This record exemplifies how we know that Earthgang could be one of the greatest hip hop groups of the modern era. This LP includes banger after banger after banger all leading up to one another, but still I feel like they are capable of doing more. Some songs like Missed Calls, Liquor Sto' and Simba are basically perfect. With recent projects it doesn't feel Earthgang is trying, but we know that they can make ... read more
The problem with this album is that there are no standout tracks. Every song is about as good as the last. However, the absolute consistency of this duo to put out almost 20 9/10 songs in a row is incredible. The production is outstanding and the mellow performances make this a perfect chill album. However, im still pissed off at Earthgang. We know what they are capable of, look at a track like UP. They can make a standout 11/10 song with lots of life and emotion. SO FUCKING DO IT. I may like ... read more
What the actual fuck how is this so good??? Endless introspective verses and the bat selection is immaculate. Starts and ends the album with 2 of Cole’s best verses of all time, and officially created probably the greatest mixtape of all time, only 1999 is competing with it.
I can’t believe people are actually enjoying STICKY STICKY STICKY STICKY other than the 4 Wayne bars. Anyways Hey Jane is Tyler’s 2nd best written song. No misses other than sticky. The Q feature goes fucking crazy. Darling I is sonically unmatched by anything else on the album.
Best Song: Darling, I or Hey Jane
Worst Song: Sticky
I mean, its a great album. Kon Karne and Kookies aren't on the level of the rest of the album, but they're still good songs. And every other song BANGS, hard. Obviously, DOOM has amazing performances. When doesn't he? But the highlight of this album is definitely the production. I still remember the first time I heard Potholderz and I was too stunned to speak. The beat was fucking majestic, and the same can be said for One Beer, Guinesses, Rapp Snitch Knishes, Vomitspit, and even ... read more
