post hardcore at its finest. it's not as singular as the mars volta, but it's firing at all cylinders and cedric's lyrics are as cryptic as ever, and it's just a good project.

heard this while on the road on the way home from kansas city and i feel like this was kind of the wrong application for this album, but it’s great noisy pop bliss. so many fun songs that are easy to get lost in in a way that dots and loops didn’t have.

reminds me of fleshwater. has that same kind of enjoyable-yet-not-substantial energy that i appreciate- wouldn’t come back on often.

post rock screamo is really good. this is INCREDIBLY one note, but what it does is cool. there are a few moments on here that are very corny, but tracks like tangled are really good and use the post rock elements in their favor- builds to a crescendo in a way that doesn’t feel unearned or cheesy or serious for something unearned.

grr.
gets worse when it doesn’t embrace melody but it’s neat.

it’s pretty, no doubt. but it’s not as catchy as Frances or as blistering as Goliath. it’s like listening to the intro to the big hitting songs stretched out. like 10 The Widows. not bad, but i just don’t care.

if ANY mars volta album deserves a bold/must-hear, it's this one. it's so off the wall and unrelenting that its hard to not love this. this feels like that band doing what they were meant to do from the beginning, this unrelenting, brutal, yet catchy and accessible progressive rock is just... incredible. since it's so much shorter in terms of song lengths, it's more palatable, yet gripping and most of all INTENSE through the whole album, although i will admit it's a bit frontloaded - the 2 ... read more

reminds me of midori. it’s a bit samey but the second track is magical in a way that’s different from like midori. interesting. like this more in theory.
FAV TRACK: 2nd one (i can’t do katakana)

absurd. otomo yoshihide always makes stuff that i can’t always understand, but that’s what makes it great.

lot less structure on this one. the latter halves of a buncha the long songs on here are made up of improvised solos on various instruments and the structures of most of these songs are a lot more complex and harder to follow than France’s or Deloused. still enjoyable yet trades the off the wall energy for something you kinda have to sit down and listen to.
FAV TRACK: Day Of The Baphomets

err. feels like wankery for the sake of wantery. this loweky makes me mad. i still enjoyed it.. i thinkl, but it's like, so abrasive and dissonant that it just blends together.

this is too much of a good thing. but boy is it a good thing. this is some of the ,most unrelenting prog rock i've ever heard. cassandra gemini is the obv showstopper here, but personally, cygnus stands out as the big number. that chorus is just so catchy, but also the build on cassandra is crazy, but also l'via l'viaquez's whole runtime is crazy. this is overwhelming. it's great and not as pretentious as i anticipated, but this is kind of overstimulating.

not as good as nurture. vocally, it's a little off, and it's frontloaded as all hell. it's kind of hard to top the best album of all time, so what can you do, but this is a pretty great interpretation of it, even if it does need a bit of a trim. i anticipate that second sky will be better.
FAV TRACK: Get Your Wish

i was expecting the mars volta to be like super pretentious. i guess they still are, but man, this is so fun that it's easy to overlook. it's very consistent and i'd come back to it again, certainly. cedric's voice is lowkey kind of beautiful on her.

last track is so good but this is just too slow to enjoy as a whole. good songs, of course, but god, most of these songs were like 6 minutes long and they don’t even end properly.
FAV TRACK: Let’s Not Shit Ourselves

there has never been an album or an artist that had a vocalist that i disliked the voice of as much as Ian Mackaye. guy picciotto’s vocals are great on this project and the bass’ lack of distortion offers for a really interesting album experience.. but ian’s vocals man. he sounds like homer simpson.
