AC/DC hater listens to the AC/DC discography 3/?
[High Voltage: 52, T.N.T: 56]
I’m very shocked so far how much I… don’t dislike this band. With Led Zeppelin I basically immediately started putting their albums in red and with R.E.M. it took me a hot minute to warm up to them, but everything I’ve heard from AC/DC has been pretty okay so far. I know it really goes down once Bob Scott died and that could be why, but this is a very solid album. I’m very shocked how ... read more
This is like if Olivia Rodrigo listened to no wave music for an hour and said “bet”. Not calling this no wave obviously, I’m just saying I like how uncomfortably grimey and dirty this production can feel. It’s not an album I expected to like at all, but it was actually really good. Besides her vocals kind of wearing out at the end and seeming rather flat and one dimensional, the album was pretty good. I appreciate post-punk revival with a hint of hardcore mixing. ... read more
AC/DC hater listens to the AC/DC discography 2/?
[High Voltage: 52]
This is where AC/DC truly becomes AC/DC. While to a large extent they still have that very early jollyness and glee, they really abandon the pop rock direction of the previous album a lot. It’s not that last album was great, but it wasn’t bad at all. This album in comparison is a sort of fun mess. This easily has some of the best AC/DC songs on here, but the tonal and quality inconsistencies prevalent are crazy. ... read more
AC/DC hater listens to the AC/DC discography 1/?
Welp… this is the big one. For those who don’t know, I did discography “hate” listens for two artists. Despite the very strong connotation of the name, my series’ were not meant to at all be pessimistic or even critical. I wanted to open my mind to artists I did not like. The first was Led Zeppelin. I came out of it not hating them anymore, but I held firm to my view that I did not like them and that half of their ... read more
First time I’ve heard of… UK Bass & Foot? Interesting genre. It’s alright. Very different for sure.
This would’ve been an otherwise pretty good album… but MAN, is that production rough dude. Everything is extremely compressed and made super bright by it. I can’t exactly describe it, but this is a really ugly mix. The songwriting and melodies on this thing are really good and for the most part scratch something in my brain pretty good, but it’s ruined by how this thing just sounds.
Second project listen of the year (I will def stop mentioning the number of projects I’ve listened to after this point), it’s shockingly great. This clears 90% of the things I heard last year. I’ve been tryna get into Plugg and PluggnB recently, so I was very intrigued by this guy. He has a very unique style of rapping where he doesn’t really rap at all but just mumbles and slurs everything. It can get pretty grating after a while, and hey, if he released an album or ... read more
First project listen of 2024!
I think me like most people found 2023 to be a pretty bad year for music. A relative lack of big releases was noticeable, and the quality of most releases was meh to say the least. I’m never gonna be a “erm music was better back in my days!” guy, but last year was probably the worst for music since 2013 or 2014 easily (those were not bad years though).
This was maaaaaybe not the best way to start the year. This guy has a whole lot of ratings on ... read more
yeah, fuck it dude. when i first heard this i thought it was cringe asf, but listening to this with the music video really helps. it feels like a breath of fresh air. am i tryna be a rap “oooo back in my day” boomer??? hell no, but this is a really nice reinvention of drill and comedy rap.
Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon 4/?
Throwaways from a throwaway album. At least Ocean Beach is next (San Geronimo teehee).
Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon 3/?
A huge step back from Rollercoaster, this is just… okay. It’s more apocalyptic which is cool and the lyricism is quite desperate and visceral. The middle run of this album is legitimate perfection, but the overall lack of instrumental coherency and the decision to end the album with the Star Spangled Banner are all too bizarre to make me like it.
Yeah I have absolutely no explanation for why I love this album. I recently listened to this cause I heard Over My Head (Cable Car) for the first time and I thought it was like… really good. It’s plagued by mid 2000s pop rock production, but that’s basically the only negative of this project. I have never been more humbled and shocked by an album before than this one. 2005 indie has a pretty negative connotation nowadays and it’s for a very good reason. A lot of the ... read more

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little bit disappointed. Katy Song is a universally beloved song and usually hailed as one of the greatest indie songs of all time, but the rest of the album, especially the back half, is just really not up to the quality of Katy Song. At least Mark Kozelek shows a great improvement on vocals.
This is ridiculously bad. Like RIDICULOUSLY bad. This is so goddamn bad it’s not funny. It’s made even worse by the fact it’s a bunch of old dudes whose band hasn’t been relevant since the 80s. This is INSANELY bad. I’m in genuine awe and disbelief. This could be one of the worst things I’ve ever heard.
Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon 1/?
I always wanted to check this band out because I truly believe Mark Kozelek is one of the greatest artists of our generation, so I’m doing a long overdue discography dive. I knew Michael and Medicine Bottle before listening to this, both songs I deeply like. Michael has some of the most sorrow and introspective lyricism on any song ever, and Medicine Bottle has such an unparallel mood. The rest of the album doesn’t really live up to these two ... read more
Pretty much the perfect jazz album, Kind of Blue is the blueprint for jazz music in general. Known as Miles Davis’ magnum opus, this has forever been one of my favorite jazz albums. One day I went to the record shop I frequent, and found a 1960s pressing of Kind of Blue for like $3. It was discounted so low because of the quality of the sleeve and the front and back covers, but listening to it is so mind blowing. This album and Ahmad Jamal’s Jamal at the Penthouse sparked my love of ... read more
The innovation of this album is terrifying. To make a genuine drone album in 1958 is unreal. To put it into reference, this is only a couple of years after Stalin died. Bill Russell only had one ring. Mickey Mantle was not only still active but BEFORE his prime. This 65 year old album is the most hauntingly forward-thinking piece of art I have ever seen. It’s all simultaneously in the past, could sound like something in the present, and also could sound like something in the future. ... read more
