There are many interesting ideas mixed with many terrible executions. Also, why is this record so goddamn long?
It's definitely not aged the best, but the variety and personality put into this record is such a key factor that any artist's debut should focus on.
It's atmospheric yet intriguing. I see this record more as some really satisfying ambient music than anything, and I believe looking at it in this way makes the listening experience much more enjoyable.
This is a very, very, very good record. HOWEVER, some people foam at the mouth acting like this album descended from the heavens, resurrected their dead dog and saved their parents from a house fire. It is not that - it has its low points, but it is still a very good record whose quality can't be denied.
It took way too long of a time for me to realize just how much of a masterpiece this record is. Every song is unique, full of character, and brings some of the most intriguing concepts to the table in all of pop history. Not to mention the production has aged like fine wine; this record sounds like it could release 20 years from now and still be amazing.
This is easily Muse's most ambitious project to date, and I believe the creativity was overflowing with this one. The experimentation with new style fusions plus Matt Bellamy's dramatic vocals leads to one of the most entertaining concept albums of the 2000s.
The songwriting and style is much more focused on Paramore's "Brand New Eyes" than previous records, and features some of their best songs. Unfortunately, there are still a handful of tracks that feel very boring/uninspired.
Probably Lady Gaga's most exciting and iconic music ever. Some tracks have aged somewhat poorly.
Incredibly ambitious, noisy, and exciting. Some tracks are a bit too overblown to make ends of them.
The color and life this album brings is an era of Coldplay that I wish we were still in. The songwriting, however, could be improved on several tracks.
This album perfectly reflects the cyclical nature of existence in some of the most breathtaking compositions one could ever experience.
Interesting beats and production mixed with some very satisfying rapping from Pusha-T and Malice make this record a very pleasureable listen.
The execution of pop-rock in the first half, and this very intriguing mystique-filled rock in the last legs of the album really give audiences a reason to listen to Muse outside of the radio. Because of this, however, the middle does suffer a bit from some more lackluster performances.
There are so many aspects of "Illinois" that make it truly a 10/10 experience. The instrumentation (which is probably the album's biggest selling point) is so extravagant in its arrangements, making almost every song feel like a live orchestral performance. The lyricism is very well thought out, researched, and sometimes very personal. The several in-between tracks that are meant to make transitions and endings more polished are such a nice touch that adds so much more character ... read more
It's just a good time all the way through. The sounds from Gorillaz's self-titled are more fleshed out and present a more linear progression on this album.
I spent way too long of the last few years of my life criticizing this record because of outer influences. But after coming back to it after a few years, I still very much enjoy the bulk of it. The production is great, the songs are focused and the messages are intentional, and it's overall a very fun album despite its more depressing and all-too-real theming. The only thing truly holding this record back is sometimes the message is a bit too front and center.
There's so much rawness and authenticity in the performances on this record that it stands a titan amongst the rest of 2000's punk rock scene. The theming is on point and MCR sticks to a consistent sound for the entire record. There are even some genuinely emotional moments on this very loud and in-your-face album. It's a good thing it's on the shorter side, however, as any longer would leave me with migranes.
Fun, classic, and full of whimsy. Jack White's incredible guitar-playing abilities allows many of these songs to continue to blow me away with each listen.
