The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
100

"I guess I just wasn't made for these times"

No Brian, no you weren't.

The Beach Boys up to 1966 were known for their surf rock outfit which, to put bluntly, was uninspired and corporately produced. Some worthy hits here and there but so much of the group's previous output is hard to sit through front to back. Then the opportunity of a lifetime was presented to lead singer Brian Wilson. Brian had already stopped touring in 1965 to focus solely on the creative process ... read more

Tyler, The Creator - CHROMAKOPIA

See, monogamy, that shit is not for me
One option for everybody? Don't you lie to me
Too many rules, I’m too curious to try to be
Hidin’ things, feelin' shame build inside of me

While not as strong as his previous three outings, Tyler The Creator is as open and emotionally available as always. This time, he lets us in on his though process behind acting a certain way in order to appease people or "putting on a mask" to say. Whether it's trying to be in a ... read more

Iglooghost - Tidal Memory Exo
75

Hands down, best cover of the year. Iglooghost comes out with his best album that is just banger after banger. This is so much more than your typical electronic album. The futuristic, forward thinking, production keeps me engaged from beginning to end. Never boring, always on point.

Father John Misty - Mahashmashana
76

A perfect lie can live forever
The truth don't fare as well
It isn't perched on lips mid-laughter
It ain’t the kind of thing you tell

Father John Misty is no stranger to year-end lists. He has been pushing what is means to be a songwriter since 2012 and it's impressive he continues to reinvent the wheel 12 years later. FJM's writing feels much more mature but keeps that introspective angle that's a cornerstone of his work. He is always questioning the different ... read more

Zach Bryan - The Great American Bar Scene
77

If you could see 'em now, you'd be proud
But you'd think they's yuppies
Your funeral was beautiful
I bet God heard you comin'

Country is the one genre I don't usually touch but Zach Bryan's string of recent success culminates in a pretty damn great album. He has such a realistic personality, you feel like you could meet this person in real life at the bar across the street with this album representing him telling the stories of his life. Filled with amazing ... read more

samlrc - A Lonely Sinner

Don't let that sheep leave this place
Don't let her think quite her way
Please don't let her go
Please don't

Dense Post-Rock Shoegaze from an artist I've never heard of before but will definitely be keeping an eye out for in the future. This album is very emotional, not just in tone and atmosphere, often dealing with themes of abuse through the lens of our sheep protagonist on their journey of self healing. Many songs build up to a "wall of sound" climax that ... read more
