Edit: this has grown on me. 85 to a 90
Original review:
Act II of Renaissance is here in the form of “Cowboy Carter”, which somehow manages to be even more ambitious than Beyoncé’s previous couple albums and leans into country. And even if this doesn’t always completely work and has its flaws, you just absolutely have to respect the big swing. I really hope Act III is as great as these first two acts, and I’d lose my mind if it’s the rumored rock ... read more
It’s rare that I care about a deluxe but these songs are great and could have easily been on the album. “Obsessed” and “So American” would have probably been in my top 5 on GUTS.
Rating for the new songs
The best Future has sounded in a while. Yeah it’s too long and a bit one-note, but it brought the world a new Kendrick verse, and a Drake diss at that, so it gets points for that.
Starts really strong, stalls in the middle, but then picks back up at the end. Very fun and filled with personality, but a bit too long overall and coasts off its likability at times. There also isn’t much that hits the high that is “Never Lose Me”. (“Tell Me What You Want From Me” is so good though, love that one)
I’m a HUGE fan of Tierra Whack, and I’ve been waiting for a long time for her followup to the amazingly creative 15 song, 15 minute “Whack World”. With it finally here, I can’t say I’m not disappointed, even if it is a pretty solid display of Tierra’s creative personality and talent. I do have to listen to it more, but first listen I’m underwhelmed.
I’ll write a full review for this at some point when my feelings on it are more solidified.
This is a return to form for Ariana Grande, and with Max Martin back in the mix this ends up having some consistently great pop songwriting and production throughout
Edit: grew off me a little, somewhere between 80-85 for me now
Beyoncé saw the rise of bad country music lately and said let me save the genre
I was not excited for this. I hadn't really heard anything from the listening parties and I was one of the biggest doubters that this would 1) ever come out and 2) actually be good, but after listening I'm pleasantly surprised. This is still one of Kanye's weaker projects, but it's leagues beyond what I expected.
A great album with amazing production that manages to cover a wide range of sounds while still always feeling cohesive, in large part due to Brittany Howard’s outstanding voice and the little bell motif played throughout the tracklist.
Feels 5 years too late, which is simultaneously part of its charm and also what holds it back.
