RIP Cloudy Nueve. He died at the end of 2019, but even in this project from 2017, you could hear the potential he had. He was about to sign with a major label before he died, and it’s so sad that he never got to hit the success he was bound for.
Wonderful. I absolutely loved this. Hemlocke Springs is the future of pop.
Despite my disappointment with the film which I got out of right before listening to this in full, I really enjoyed this!
Damn. This is gonna require many listens to fully take in but holy shit.
A display of her talent and potential. Great pop production and catchy hooks, but the songwriting isn't as strong as her post-album singles "Good Luck, Babe" and "The Subway", or even the high of "Pink Pony Club."
Big fan of her last record, and I have a real soft spot for well-executed mainstream (kinda generic) R&B. And this is a very good album in that lane! Nothing special or amazing and maybe a bit bland but I enjoyed it.
I listened to this album in 2021, and again in 2024, but I couldn’t really make heads or tails of it. I knew I liked it and was wildly impressed by it, but it was unlike anything I had ever heard and I kept waiting for the right time to really dive into it further. Revisiting it now, it’s still extremely abstract and experimental in a way that is going to require more listens to really take in, but oh my god the sheer emotion and atmosphere here hit me. “Knees”, ... read more
Great storytelling, pretty great production throughout, and yet, it rarely transcends to reach its full potential or become his best project. Still fire though!
Hot take I guess but this is a great pop rap album. Not even a big J Cole fan like that (I’m very nostalgic for 2014FHD) but this is a really fun listen. Rise & Shine is so good.
Great timing on my part to finally listen to this album for the first time only two months after my Mom died...lol. Hit a little too close to home. Not quite cathartic (although somewhat comforting?), as much as just a sad listen. But great nonetheless.
I had heard a handful of songs from this throughout the last year and really liked them, and I’ve been wanting to listen to this in full for a while, but just never got around to it. But with the AOTY Grammy win and the Super Bowl halftime show coming up, I figured it was a good time. Very good album, even if it’s a bit too long.
The production is fire and this is consistently really good, but rarely great. Yet another Don Toliver album where he punches below his weight. I like it a lot still but I know he can make a classic someday. He just needs to focus!
Maybe it’s nostalgia clouding me, but this is extremely underrated. If this was shorter and cut some of the filler, this could have been equal to TRAPSOUL. “Self-Made” is probably top 10 trap song of the decade for me, and “Don’t Get Too High” is so crazy.
Beyond my nostalgia for this, its actually held up pretty well as an essential project in this specific 2010s sound.
Some generational songs here, pretty consistent throughout, short…a good time capsule of this era
