Deftones - private music

Primary Genre: Alternative Metal | Post-Metal
Secondary Genre: Post-Hardcore | Shoegaze
Ranking: Amazing

I initially liked it on my first listen, but wasn't that big on it, but after 2 extra full listens of the album, I think this is an amazing album, I get the hype. All the choruses are catchy, but on my first listen of "Locked Club" I wasn't so sure on it, though I love that song now. It's the usual from Deftones, it's mostly what you expect. Jack Jarvis - Secret Songs

Primary Genre: Folk Pop
Ranking: Great

I lowkey really enjoyed this, first song is the weakest, like a 5/10, the other 2 are great though dude. The singing is the highlight of the EP for me, though the guitar work sounds pretty beautiful at times.

The first song I mainly didn't like as much due to the vocal delivery, sounded a bit like "radio pop". I personally think you should focus more on doing the type of vocals in the other 2 tracks. Sounds way better imo.

Sadness - Somewhere Along Our Memory...
95

Primary Genre: Blackgaze | Depressive Black Metal Secondary Genre: Dark Ambient | Neoclassical
Ranking: Masterpiece

This is genuinely one of the most depressive albums I've heard, and it is so goddamn beautiful. The songs have a slow build-up (especially in "When the First Snow Fell") and release and although I usually would be bothered by this, it is so audibly satisfying to hear the energy release that happens in these songs.

Primary Genre: Mathcore
Ranking: Amazing

This is a really strong mathcore album that is pretty short, but I think it does everything it needs to do in the 23 minute runtime.

I love the violent chaotic instrumentation, very memorable shit, it simply sounds so damn cool. I'm talking about the bass too. Great vocals, but the guitars are easily the standout (for the most part).

"Wasted Life" is a great way to start the album, it starts with bouncy riffs and heads into a ... read more

Picturesque - Back to Beautiful

Primary Genre: Post-Hardcore
Ranking: Very Good

Thanks to @SultrixSymphony for the recommendation.

This is a very good album, but I think the vocals have some missed potential, at rare moments within the album the singer does mid-pitch singing and it sounds far better than their usual high-pitch singing, the mid-pitch singing reminds me of Keaton Pierce's vocals.

Though the album has no shortage of catchy choruses, I feel the guitar work is pretty same-y, and just lacking overall. For ... read more

Chevelle - Sci-Fi Crimes

Secondary Genre: Post-Hardcore
Ranking: Amazing

My second favourite Chevelle album. So damn catchy, every song (that has one) has an extremely catchy chorus. Though I like WWN more than this, in some moments I enjoy it more than WWN. The guitars are brilliant and catchy too, albeit a bit of a weaker performance than in WWN.

"Roswell's Spell" is easily my favourite in terms of the vocal performance, there is a certain verse ... read more

LowCityRain - LowCityRain

Primary Genre: Coldwave
Secondary Genre: Shoegaze | Synthpop
Ranking: Masterpiece

This is a 36 minute long side project of Markus Siegenhort, unfortunately it seems he's completely abanonded LowCityRain, considering it's been 12 years. This is especially unfortunate as I prefer this over all Lantlõs albums, though "Melting Sun" is fairly close in quality.

One thing I wanna say, the bass work is absolutely brilliant. I don't often hear music that allows the ... read more

Frail Body - Artificial Bouquet

Primary Genre: Skramz | Post-Metal
Secondary Genre: Blackgaze | Post-Hardcore
Ranking: Divine

So this is my favourite album ever, I love it so much. I try to refrain from listening to it too much, in case I spoil it for myself and need a longer absence from it.

The band consists of Lowell Schafer (vocals, guitar, lyrics), Nic Kuczynski (bass), and Nicholas Clemenson (drums).

"Artificial Bouquet" perfectly balancing intensity, beauty, and depressiveness - the album's ... read more

Night Rider - Night Rider

Primary Genre: Djent | Progressive Metalcore | Synthwave
Ranking: Masterpiece

This is personally my favourite album of 2023, and just in-general, one of the greatest metalcore albums I've listened to, to be quite frank. I think the combination of djent and synthwave works really well here, reminds me of the band Dreamwake, but I definetly prefer Night Rider.

This album consists of mostly singing, with occassional mid-pitch screams - the choruses are just magnificent, once I listen to ... read more

Chevelle - Wonder What's Next (Expanded Edition)

Primary Genre: Alternative Metal
Secondary Genre: Alternative Rock | Post-Hardcore

By default I give this at least a 90 cause I love WWN, but these extra songs would've worked better as a seperate EP in my opinion - or they could've done some more cover songs and make an LP. "One Lonely Visitor" is an amazing album closer (underrated song) and is one of my favourite songs of the album, it's a very somber song that has dropped the energy of all the other songs, which is ... read more

Frail Body - A Brief Memoriam

Primary Genre: Skramz | Post-Rock
Secondary Genre: Post-Hardcore

I think Frail Body gets better with each release, I think this EP is a strong 9/10 (edit: I changed my mind, this shit is a 10), and their "Artificial Bouquet" album is a 10/10.

"A Brief Memoriam" is about bereavement, it feels pretty much hopeless, especially compared to "Artificial Bouquet" which has some hope to it.

My favourite song is "Tradition in Verses", it has the most ... read more

Primary Genre: Skramz
Secondary Genre: Post-Hardcore

It's pretty wild how such a great song this is - is their weakest song by a fair margin in my opinion. Which is good btw, because through my eyes they have massively improved their sound from this to "A Brief Memoriam", to "Artificial Bouquet", both respectively my favourite EP and albums ever.

So if yall are a fan of skramz and post-hardcore, this is a must-listen, especially their later works - ... read more

Currents - The Way It Ends
100

This, in my opinion, is the best metalcore and prog metal album I have ever listened to, though not by a big margin.

"Never There" is a great opener, pretty layed back song instrumentally, but vocally there are mid-pitch harsh vocals. The song is about alchohol addiction. "I drink till I can't blink, and I fill my brain with holes. My voice is worse for wear - because I lost my self control, I've lost my hope."

"A Flag to Wave" is fantastic. This song ... read more

Aviators - The Reimagined Future

To me, this is the best Aviators album, and just in-general my 3rd favourite album ever.

This album for the most part, blends Synthwave and Synthpop (sometimes some synthrock sneaks in), with the exception being "Dark Star", which is a beautiful acoustic ballad, seemingly about (what I believe) a celestial god the protaganist has found and is strongly in love with. Perhaps I am wildly misinterpretating what the song is about, but I don't think he's ever discussed the ... read more

pinksuicide - My Rotting Body

Dunno why this album is tagged as blackgaze, I'm not hearing it at all, but regardless it's a great dark ambient/noise album that sometimes goes into post-rock. Not very relistenable though due to it's length of 103 minutes.

Beautiful and moderately haunting / 10

Too Close To Touch - Haven't Been Myself
100

Gotta be my second favourite post-hardcore album ever, just behind Artificial Bouquet by Frail Body. And in-general, like a top 5 album.

Pretty sad album all around, "Eiley" genuinely gives me goose bumps during parts of the song, throughout the whole album he doesn't really scream much, but during this song he does it pretty frequently, and they are very effective at getting you engaged and causing some unease.

My favourite song from the album I will say is ... read more

Idunnomaybe - James Warren Dean Jr.

I'll start with the only major flaw, the vocals in track 3, they are pitched way too high, and also corny lyrics in the song imo. Moving on too the positives.

The instrumentation is consistently enjoyable, great sometimes, and I love the singing in track 5. And I think the regular rapping in one of the other songs was much better than what was going on in track 3. I like it.

I don't really know what you'd call this but this is something new to me.

Track 5 is my favourite ... read more
