Lovejoy - Call Me What You Like

Simultaneously the best, worst, and least-lovejoy lovejoy song. First off, that riff in the intro is incredible, I had high hopes but that just blew me away. Also, the bridge and its near-spoken word delivery is wonderful. But, that chorus man, it feels very out of place, as if they took it from another song and just stuck it in there. A great cover, the instrumentation feels significantly cleaner and nicer, without straying from the original sound. The vocal delivery is also generally better (though the outro not so much) and has more emotion.

A nice few songs that serve as a great debut. Clearly states their intentions as an indie band, establishes lovejoy as having a separate identity from wibur’s previous work, and also horns. The songs are fairly short and simple, and while they still work very well, it’s clear this is just a starting point for future growth.

A lot of people ascribe a sense of wonder, or nostalgia, or innocence to them, but I believe you can assign any emotion to most of the tracks. ... read more

This is such a strange album. From the cover art that looks like a drawing made by a child and the sugary-sweet sounds of the synths on the indie pop tracks, made by a band named after unicorns, the initial impression is that this is a very childish and immature record. But then there are tracks with titles like ‘Ready to Die’ and lyrics filled with death and ghosts, parasites and fleshy vessels and making love in graves. But what’s really weird is how effortlessly the ... read more
