System of a Down - Toxicity
90

Conservatives listening to System of a Down meanwhile the lyrics are literally: "Ooh America sucks I'm going to blow up the CIA headquarters yeah"

I can't say that Metal is a favourite genre of mine, but even I can recognize the immense quality behind System of a Down's "Toxicity." Serj Tankian has a very distinct and unique voice that helps to give the album a unique identity. The instrumentals are pretty top notch, and lyrically, the album packs a whole ... read more

Dominic Fike - Don't Forget About Me, Demos
63

Kind of really generic, but there's definitely a spot for it in the popular music sphere so I can't hate too much

Shabazz Palaces - Black Up
83

One of the rare occasions where as soon as the album finished, I played again right from the start because I just KNEW I was missing something. I'm glad I did, because I found a serious amount more of respect for the album in doing so.

If you aren't prepared for it, "Black Up" might just sound sort of "off" to you like it did me. I didn't mind it at first, but the absurdity of the beats paired with some low-mixed vocals didn't fully settle until near the ... read more

Lingua Ignota - SINNER GET READY
84

Between Lingua Ignota and her other name "Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter," I've learned some things about about her. Namely: She has a LOT of unresolved religious trauma. Seemingly, a very good source of inspiration for quality art

Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want
89

Very few albums really live up to the moniker of "unrelenting," and I think that Daughters' (as of now) final album fits the description. "You Won't Get What You Want" doesn't hit you with a constant wall of noise, but it is a constantly creeping cacophony of distorted drums, guitars, and booming vocals.

It doesn't over OR understate itself, towing the perfect line for me in terms of how much noise I like in my "Hardcore" stuff

Blonde Redhead - Blonde Redhead
75

Like a lot of 90's Rock, pretty good if not a little forgettable

NNAMDÏ - Bootie Noir
56

Unmoderated creativity is simultaneously a goldmine and a death sentence. On the upside, the freedom to do whatever you want can result in some incredible and unique stuff, but without any kind of through line, nonstop barrages of whatever can be grating.

Bootie Noir really IS a unique album, but it just feels so fragmented and the over-a-decade-old comedy never really landed very often, so I wasn't super enthralled

Adrianne Lenker - Bright Future
76

The sad gay cowperson is back with another sad cowperson album. Adrianne Lenker's songwriting is as heartfelt and tragic as ever, but the instrumental front of "Bright Future" left just a bit to be desired from me

Q-Tip - The Renaissance
83

Little did I know that before "We Got It from Here..." Q-Tip was bringing in the Jazzy, Boom Bap ATCQ sound into the 21st century.

It's hard to place, but somehow the whole album sounds like it's on this kind of funky, groovy metronome. The beats and vocal performances have this sort of method of consistent emphasis that it gives the perfect head-bobbing quality

The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I
82

Thank GOD for nerdy losers for making bangers like this so that other nerdy losers can listen to it and write reviews on the internet no one will read talking about how "avant" and "experimental" it is and then calling it something like "Post-Emo-Wavegaze-Math-Calculus-Dookie-Butt-core"

070 Shake - Modus Vivendi
85

For some reason, listening to this album shot me back to when I first started really listening to music. back when everything sounded like I hadn't heard anything like it before and my preconceptions of music weren't bound by what I heard others say.

To me, this album sounds like discovering music again for the first time

Body Meat - Truck Music
64

Deconstructed Club that goes a little too heavy on the "deconstructed" aspect and not quite enough on the actual "club" aspect

Girlpool - Before The World Was Big
69

I see what Girlpool was going for: A sort of lo-fi nostalgia angle. The simple yet personal lyrics and the even more simple instrumentals are meant to evoke thematic ties to the simplicity of youth.

That's just it though: It's quite simple. Sweet and inoffensive, but simple

Black Milk & Danny Brown - Black and Brown!
76

The production is really good, and it has Danny Brown my glorious king rapping on it, but somehow the pieces just don't all fit together. I don't think it has some of Danny's best rapping on it, even if it's still quite good, and the beats somehow sound LESS experimental than what Danny normally works with

Lupe Fiasco - Samurai
85

Edit: 90-->85

Edit: Still think the album is really good, but returning to it again, I just don't feel as strongly about it now as when I first listened

Not a second goes by where the beats, lyrics, or delivery falter. It's incredibly consistent, almost too much so if that makes any sense

Slint - Spiderland
75

Slint's "Spiderland" is at its best when its going full force and delivering on the powerful instrumentals. The bulk of the album centers around very subdued, methodical, and moody Math Rock instrumentation that, while intriguing, just didn't engage or interest me as much as it could have

Beach House - Teen Dream
95

Impossibly breathtaking and beautiful. Beach House remain the masters of all things Dream Pop and ethereal

Denzel Curry - King of the Mischievous South Vol. 2
76

A bit of step down sonically and lyrically compared to earlier Denzel albums, but still a solid song collection. I really enjoyed the more conscious direction Curry was taking, so KotMS V.2 feels like a bit of a backstep.

The lyrical quality varies quite heavily from song-to-song, largely depending on which of the MANY features are currently performing. Most of them had fairly decent showings, but the sheer quantity did distract a bit from Denzel. The production was absolutely the highlight, ... read more

Annie Clark - Ratsliveonnoevilstar
70

Was curious as to what (if anything) Annie Clark had released prior to the "St. Vincent" name. turns out it's.... not a whole lot; A single EP of material and that's it. It's quite clearly lo-fi and a little rough around the edges. It feels sort of meaningless comparing it to later St. Vincent music, but on it's own I guess it's a decent enough little collection of grungy art-pop
