The drums go so hard at first but then it feels like a real gimmick after a few songs. Too much atmosphere not enough detail. This is like if Pinegrove was Scandinavian and got really deep into an ambient electronic phase
i saw these guys open for fontaines dc like 6 months ago but for some reason im only getting to actually listening to the album in full now. wish i had gotten to it sooner! terrific world-building and atmospheric, some really hypnotic trip pop and glitch pop tracks. Sometimes it feels derivative of In Rainbows or Aphex Twin, but the vibe is immaculate, the production is stellar, and the vocals are solid.
Boy does this guy love his drum machine! Fun bit of power pop but there are some tracks that fit better for WFYE
Labi Siffre is like the Mister Rogers of music. A warm, generous mentor. Unfortunately, nothing on the rest of the album lives up to Bless The Telephone but it’s all lovely
this is like if nick drake actually wrote his lyrics about his depression
Very fun record that starts and ends well despite a down period in the middle. Some moments sound like if Daft Punk and Genesis had a baby. For some reason i feel like i need him to collab w Don Toliver
Superb! Redveil is one of the most talent self-producing rappers out rn. There are some good emotional points here and the clearest development is that his singing voice is great, but i’m not super attached to his bars. Especially w the brass and choirs, it feels super Flower Boy and Late Registration-coded. He’s an amazing producer but it always sounds like he’s doing a Tyler/Kanye impression
calm lil remixes. didnt need a ten minute version playing classics. doesnt really improve on the album at all but cool and fun to hear new versions
bro sounds like thom yorke doing a jeff buckley impression. absolutely insane, ireland is calling me once more. he really did the heavy metal thing by dropping the AOTY the week after lists came out
Not as great as Radio DDR but still an excellent piece of revivalism from a young kid with a knack for simple, pleasant tunes
Just about everything you could ask for from a singer-songwriter album
One of the easiest listens of any record this year. Pure, sweet ‘70s warmth. Super fun but also a bit too derivative at points: “Miffed It” is maybe the best song on the album but it sounds exactly like a lost gem from a Nick Drake recording session and “Ibiza” has a groove straight from the Talking Heads
Over the course of 15 years, Mitski has consistently made despair sound like the most beautiful thing ever. When can we get a full synth-pop album?
These feel like demos, super loose. But wow the production is soo creative i’m very interested to see more from this kid especially if he tightens it up a bit
For such a self-mythologizing band that claims to have single-handedly revived indie sleaze and popularized rick owens, they’re really just doing a crystal castles/lcd soundsystem thing. Where they thought they were offering an opus, this record is simply artifice. Most of these tracks would fit on their last album, which was undeniably more catchy and inventive
