Prior to listening to Death, I wasn't well versed in the world of death metal. Sure I heard Metallica, Black Sabbath, and some Nu-Metal bands such as System of a Down, Korn, and Deftones (if you count them as Nu-Metal), but my knowledge of metal outside of those bands was limited. For those reasons, I wanted to go outside of my comfort zone and try something new. Now having heard this album, I can say for certain I am a fan. It's encouraged me to check out other albums of theirs such ... read more
Upon revisiting Public Castration Is A Good Idea, I thought Cop (as a studio album) would scratch the same itch that album did. For this reason, I had high hopes while revisiting this album. Unfortunately, this album lacks consistency which comes to its detriment. Sure, the degrading sound of this album does accomplish what it sets out to do, but there are too many rough patches that bring many of these tracks down. For starters, songs like Why Hide and Clay Man have themes that are touched on ... read more
There is no good way to explain the experience that is Soundtracks For The Blind. Even though I was left shocked after listening to both discs, I still can't explain what I sat though. Trying to properly sum up the content on this album is an impossible task because while some tracks and sounds do have their own characteristics, they all feel somewhat distinct even if they share the same motifs. With the 26 tracks on this album, there are some weak spots; however that doesn't detract from the ... read more
With this review I'm going to ruffle the feathers of those who love his album, but remember: this is my opinion.
Personas or characters behind any particular brand of music are looked at with lots of admiration and there is good reason for it. Putting time into understanding the persona someone takes can help enhance the experience and generate curiosity with the music. Hayden's persona Ethel Cain is definitely a persona that generates intrigue. It's what made me so interested in what this ... read more
I have very fond memories with this album. It's the album with great amazing songs like Money, Time and The Great Gig In The Sky that established my love for Pink Floyd and music as a whole. It's the first album I heard from start to finish ever. I loved this album in my formative music listening years because it represented something great: an album that had no bad songs from start to finish.
While sure this may be the case, there are definitely some low spots on this album. The Great Gig In ... read more
Buckle up... I have a lot to say.
Whenever I decided to dive into the mystique of Swans, I had no idea what I was going to expect. Knowing Anthony Fantano gave the second in this album a 10 in what the fans call this "trilogy", I wanted to start proper: I wanted to start with The Seer. Going into this album initially, I was in my junior year of high school and I heard the loud breakdown from the title track off this album. It had me so intrigued. I wanted to listen to this album so ... read more
OK Computer is a mental trial. It's an exhausting listen based on the lyrics alone. Some soundscapes sound cold and hopeless, while others sound optimistic, bright sometimes. It's an album where you can explore it and find that you can explore it even further.
Yes, this album is a critical darling. It's recognized as one of the greatest albums of all time, but I think it does deserve that title. A lot of what is offered here is of high quality. I'm just throwing words that make sense ... read more
Before I dive into the music and what it meant for Radiohead, I must explain the significance this album had on how I listen to music. Around the time I listened to this for the first time (probably 16 in my sophomore year of high school), I had only really liked listening to Kanye and Pink Floyd (as well as some rock). At that point, I thought Pink Floyd was the best band of all time and that nothing could ever top the music they made..... until I got bored one day and wanted to listen to ... read more
My first experiences with this album were underwhelming. Knowing this album would go on to influence Beach House, I was excited to try this out. I'm also not that familiar in the genres of shoe gaze or dream pop. Despite my anticipation, my experience was hindered by my expectations. I wanted something louder or more "blissful" than what I expected.
Fast forward 2-3 years and I can say with full confidence I was wrong.... so so so wrong. The first five tracks of this album are full ... read more
Godamn he loves to say the word yeah
This was insufferably boring. The lyrical content was made so annoying by the use of the word "yeah" and the instrumentals had so little happening. It's like The OOZ by King Krule but so much worse. The 45 MINUTE song at the end does nothing to help this project. Time slows down to a crawl at the end I swear.
Cities Aviv has made some good stuff. This is not good. It's really bad.
This is my favorite Radiohead album. I know this opinion will have so many people up in flames, but it's too good.
While this might be considered Radiohead's most "positive" album, all of the lyrics are all shrouded in insecurity. My favorite song of this album, Nude, is a perfect example of this. This song is literally the meme "when you're happy you enjoy the music, when you're sad you understand the lyrics". This has to be one of the greatest songs about an unrequited ... read more
Being one of the quintessential albums from their "golden period" (from Meddle to The Wall), Animals is probably my personal favorite out of all of them. The concept, based around George Orwell's Animal Farm, is very well executed. The long nature of the songs works well foe each track. All roles played by each member work so well in unison. Dogs, especially, has some of the greatest instrumental passages on a Pink Floyd album. When the first section of the song, Gilmoure's guitar ... read more
This one really surprised me.
Nirvana appealed to me at a young age but my initial impressions didn't stick with me. Smells Like Teen Spirit was always on the radio and it always excited me, but I was tired of it over time. I heard Lithium a lot with a friend while we biked around the city we lived in, though I never revisited it. Don't get me wrong, I liked the material on Nevermind, but I wasn't carried away either.
Four years later I'm recommended Nevermind on Spotify and decide to ... read more
Strange as it might sound, this album feels like attending a loud, crazy metal concert. A great way of putting the sound of this album into words is like being lit on fire and running. It's great from start to finish. It deserves attention, especially in Metallica's discography.
Death Grips has the ability to entertain their listeners through the outbursts of what I would like to call "what the fuck is that!?!?" moments, and making music that goes hard as fuck at the same time. They also have an uncanny ability to create some of the weirdest shit imaginable to the degree that understanding it is impossible (case in point: Gamers on the Moon and Year of the Snitch). In both cases, Death Grips is like an itch: once you scratch it once, you have to scratch it ... read more
