The majority of this tape is pretty bland compared to the rest of Charli's discography. The production is just okay, and her lyrics are also just okay. But, with this being her first project, I can understand that it wouldn't be stellar, like some of her much later albums. Heartbreaks and Earthquakes is a fun and short mixtape, but don't expect anything of substance from it.

With the Series of Unfortunate Events novels being all the rage when I was a kid, this album hits a very nostalgic part of me as well as my hidden love for gothic style music. The clean and poppy production on this, with Stephin Merritt's deep, harrowing voice, makes an album that is something that I can listen to when I want to feel happy, or when I feel like the characters of the books this was based on. There's no way a better musical interpretation of this series could have been done, and ... read more
i fucked up, this is a single.
And a great single this is. It's kinda built around Despot's verse, and Antwon is weaker on this, but the hook is great, and this is yet another promising single from the upcoming full length.
Probably the best hip hop song of last year, and definitely the best to come from all three of these artists since 2013.
With absolutely no expectations of this record going in on my first listen, I was pleasantly surprised. The odd combination of traditional folk music, electronic, and other various influences create something unlike any other album I have heard. Most of the album is very ambient in nature, never getting very loud or wild, and there are very clean transitions from section to section of each song, as they change pace and style multiple times. A standout feature of Sells His Record Collection ... read more
After Charli XCX's brilliant collaboration with PC Music producer SOPHIE last year, it became apparent to a lot of people that the new direction she was taking (even if it isn't a drastic change) would be extremely beneficial to her. And with this full-length PC-esque tape, Charli XCX proves that she had it in her to make another banger-filled pop project. With plenty of help from featured artists, my favorites being Abra and CupcakKe, Number 1 Angel has no shortage of strong hooks and verses ... read more
One of the most unique and breathtaking albums I have ever gone through. Certainly something that needs to be listened to by everyone.
Every radio/mainstream music listener thinks Sheeran is the deepest, most authentic songwriter that exists on planet earth. When, in reality, he is no more emotional or elaborate than any bedroom pop artist on bandcamp tagged as "alternative".
Two of my favorite aspects of post-rock are the piano crescendos mixed with guitars, and the all out mayhem that ensues from some arrangements. He Has Left Us Alone gives me the former, and I am left completely musically blue balled with a lack of the latter.
Now, it may seem like I am being selfish and not acknowledging the brilliance of these softer post-rock albums. But, there is only so much of the same that there can be on a single album before something different needs to be added. ... read more
The return of New Zealand's most promising singer-songwriter of pop music returned with a song which leaves me needing more. Green Light is very far from being one of Lorde's best songs, with many reasons for that. It takes a much more basic and predictable approach, which is good and bad. On the negative side, it takes the trendy edm-pop sound, classes it up a little bit, and adds some of Lorde's most boring lyrics. She could be changed with any singer on this track and it would be just as ... read more
In a rather heavy black metal album, The Body doesn't really do anything interesting or daring. The vocals are so drowned out behind the guitars that they are completely unintelligible, and unfortunately those guitars and drums aren't even that much to listen to. The Body is a pretty run of the mill album that needs some tweaking. Nothing is at all bad, but nothing is very good either.
A lack of direction plagues Stormzy on his latest album, but on the directions that he does follow, he has some solidly enjoyable performances. His attempt to include gospel/soul influences were both interesting and a bore. Tracks like Blinded By Your Grace pt. 1 are absolutely stunning and do a substantial job at bringing deeper meaning to hip hop (all of the gospel areas of this project also do a much better job at gospel-rap fusion than Kanye West did with TLOP last year). But then there ... read more
Absolutely beautiful math rock. The melodies and arrangements are as good as it gets. This is one of those projects that you can listen to in any mood and still fully appreciate it.
Xiu Xiu's newest output after their eerie interpretation of the Twin Peaks soundtrack is one of their best albums yet, from a pop standpoint. With a group as versatile as Xiu Xiu, expectations are a pretty tough thing to have, but mine were blown away. Jamie's heartbreaking lyrics and harrowing voice make Forget all more bone chilling than I thought it would have been. The fuzzy, sometimes house-like, electronic production is easily the best aspect of this album; it brings a more modern vibe ... read more
The first 10-15 tracks are great: technical indie rock with some electronic aspects. The sparsely scattered vocals are a decent touch, but they don't really add anything to the album. However, after the 1st 15 songs, the remaining 10 become a chore. Many of the same chords and structures that were explored on the first part of the album are reinterpreted later, and nothing stands out. Luckily, everything is still more than tolerable even if it is repetitive. I feel a lot of different genre ... read more
everyone is acting surprised that this is bad. its Linkin Park in 2017. what the fuck were you expecting. they gotta stay relevant somehow.
A great progression with the original electronic rock sounds that were shown on Sound of Silver. Albeit This Is Happening is far from being as enjoyable as SOS, it has some great tunes, and slightly better songwriting on some tracks.
fav tracks: Dance Yrself Clean (standout, one of the best songs in their discography), Home, You Wanted A Hit, One Touch
Heems' first project after the breakup of Das Racist is one of the more impressive works from him as an artist. With a huge variation of beats on this thing, I'm always focused in on whats going on, as it is pretty hard to get bored when there is so much going on. There are a couple filler tracks throughout the mixtape, but not enough to deter the overall quality of the tape. Heems' bars are as crafty as always, and one of the most impressive characteristics of Nehru Jackets is the features. ... read more
