I really enjoyed this album at first but.. I don't know. I've grown off of it a lot, the sound of it just can't help but feel very unpleasant, mostly because of how it's mixed/produced
It’s hard not to constantly compare this to Greed. It’s undeniably it’s sister album but it feels more like a shadow of Greed than a twin. The atmosphere is a lot floatier and less eerie than Greed, but it just doesn’t pack quite the punch. Something that very much doesn’t help is that two out of the seven songs on the album are just taken from greed.
While Fool (#2) is a rework of the version on Greed and probably one of the better songs on the album, Holy Money ... read more
I feel like this album is the point where I really start noticing Swans finding their direction and creating something that feels whole and amazing (at least compared to their earlier records). They still draw heavily from their no wave roots, but the sound here is more grounded and meticulous. There's a lot more actual singing (with a lot of aggression still present, thankfully), the instrumentals are less noisy and more defined, and the album overall feels much more coherent than the ... read more
This album is less abrasive and in-your-face than Filth. It takes a much more restrained approach, featuring heavily distorted but distant guitars, guttural and sluggish vocals, and very punchy (yet oddly produced) percussion. The looped riffs are still present and are integral to the sound; they're aiming for something that isn’t really rooted in melody or traditional songwriting, but rather in rhythm and especially experimentation with textures, which is particularly noticeable in ... read more
I love how the actual riffs and guitars feel more like a baseline for the album, repetitive patterns where the only changing factors are really the drums and vocals. This creates and almost occult sound, as if it's trying to hypnotize you with it's unadulterated rage and toxicity. It's crazy that Swans started THIS good (ignoring the debut EP)
honestly not sure what to think of this album
it both has some of the most interesting songs Radiohead has ever made, but feels kinda forgettable
it's both such a cool experience yet feels kind of bland
Honestly this is where Radiohead peaked, combining the intricate electronic sounds from kid A, the artistic and strong themes from OK Computer and I even feel some more intensity and rawness from the bends. It's their magnum opus in my eyes
honestly just a slightly better version of Under the Bushes Under the Stars
This is one of those albums that I can really appreciate for what it's going for, even if that means I don't really enjoy it or would listen to it much. This record just builds so much atmosphere with the slow, heavy and repetitive chugging really making this feel dark and somber. I like it
Absolutely flabbergasted by how talented this artist is when they're still so young. I'm also a very big fun of just how diverse and eclectic it is, keeping the album very fresh and making it really stick in my mind. Such amazing work.
sure, it's a bit corny and does lack a lot of the finesse that later Radiohead records have, but god the majority of these songs are just really great. I really don't understand why this album is so hated
fourth Radiohead album I've heard and they really just never miss, while it doesn't have highlights the way Kid A, OK Computer and even In Rainbows tho, it is actually the most consistent album I have heard from them yet.
(rated the 24 song version)
I love "fucking around" albums like this, even if my personal enjoyment isn't always as high I just love checking them out
This album really feels like looking at a woozy abstract painting which is just lots of fun.
Reminds me a bit of Sheena Ringo with how genre-bending but fun the album is, it leans a lot more into jazz and breakcore though (what a combination lol)
