Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly

What can I say about this album that hasn’t already been said.

Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d city

I really like this album and I think it captures really well his childhood growing up in Compton in just one day in his life while also having a narrative, true story running throughout that ties it together really well. It also provides an incredible depiction of what it’s like to live in the city not only as a teenager through Kendrick’s story but as a parent through the interludes of his mother and father speaking to him on the phone as well as providing an incredible depiction ... read more

CASisDEAD - FAMOUS LAST WORDS

Really great album, a bit bloated with all the skits and a few of the songs weren’t great but most of them were and the final song was probably my favourite although pat earrings and boys will be boys are also excellent.

Danny Brown - uknowhatimsayin¿

A good album with some great stand out songs (negro spiritual) but I felt almost every time the beat cam in I was excited, it sounded great and I could imagine a calmer Danny brown going really well with most of these beats but then Danny would come in and unusually for him, as he’s really great, the nervy he bought or the speed or cadence of his rapping would clash with the beat for me and get most songs off on a bad foot. It gets better towards the end though

Mmmmmmm I love Tom MacDonald his body and brain are so sexy

billy woods - Aethiopes

Really really good album. I didn’t love it for a while after I heard it but I relistened to it recently and it’s just incredible. The rustic production and sometimes loud, sometimes introspective and ponderous lyrics really add to it. I feel like there is a deeper meaning or theme to it that I don’t understand but it’s still really great.

Little Simz - Sometimes I Might Be Introvert
96

Will definitely change my rating after further listens but it’s really good
Edit: yeah this is an incredible album
Edit 2: this album just grows on me with every listen, like the best works of art there are details you only notice after hearing or seeing it again and again that just make it that much more special and incredible. Also that last song is absolutely gorgeous. I adore it. If any album I’ve already heard will become a 10 over time it will be this or the forever ... read more

Great soul samples

JID - The Forever Story

Masterpiece, if any album I’ve already heard will become a 10 over time it will be this or sometimes I might be introvert.
Edit: I just listened to stars again and I always loved the song and never understood why people didn’t and now, reading the lyrics, I’m even more confused. It’s an incredible, introspective look at stardom, what to do when your rich, your friends you had when you weren’t and how you should approach it all with an incredible switch in the ... read more

Really really good why doesn’t everyone love and respect this as a classic? Nearly every single song hits and there are so many highlights that to name them all would practically be the whole album. Brilliant.

Kendrick Lamar - DAMN.
91

An incredible album that, while it doesn’t feel as personal as any of his other projects, justifies this by being about all humans, our flaws and failings, while also being about the politics of America and how we jump at any disagreement with our own views and how many people in America live institutionalised lives gangbanging which is all presented on LUST. showing how we all live different versions of the same lives, stuck in cycles of anger and bitterness. It does all of this while ... read more

It took me a while to like this but I love it now

Pusha T - DAYTONA

Really really good even though it’s short

JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown - SCARING THE HOES
95

Album of the year
Edit: I changed this to a 99 because while I can’t fault it at all I don’t think it is a ‘perfect album’

Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Style

One of their best albums and very understated

"I would agree on most points, what I found so interesting on ILDMLFY was the introspection and usual Peggy lyrics contrast, the crazy new production style and the focused, tighter tracklist than many of his other albums. But I think the criticism of stagnation isn’t as important, he’s experimented with new elements on pretty much all his last albums across his career, so I think him not doing so for the first time is ok, I’m happy to just have more of the same, even if it isn’t as good as lots of what came before."

"This is yet another really good review, I’m not massively familiar with their previous eps, having only heard the first one once before listening to this, but I was personally very satisfied with their take on post punk post rock, I was really hoping they wouldn’t end up copying BCNR with the loud, sudden dynamic shifts to end their songs, so I loved the shorter songs either having a soft slow build or being fiery and brash throughout, and as for the longer songs, I found the mixing to be great, being grimy and muddy on something like look down on us, but then delicately balancing all the elements equally at the end of reconcile, and I loved how the length allowed them to morph or shift into sonic phases. Also I preferred the sax to before."

"Incredible review, I’ve found myself thinking the same thing about AOTY recently, and just online music discussions in general, I think people are so set on proving how unique and interesting their taste is it becomes a toxic and spiteful place where they can argue and ragebait each other for eternity. Also, don’t feel pressured to do more reviews than you want to, I always appreciate the depth and personality you bring to them, but if you need to take time for yourself thats far more important."
