LAUSSE THE CAT - The Mocking Stars
80

This is an exception for me not liking UK Hip Hop, but it's kind of different from what it usually is. He's just got the accent, but it hardly even sounds like Hip Hop. I kind of liked it though.
I didn't know why this was so high up on the yearly list, since it looked like one of those weirdcore albums that usually get horrid ratings, so I decided to check it out. Probably one of my dumbest moments yet.
No features, just 1 hour of some really poetic stuff. Of course, the lyrics ... read more

Nas - Light-Years

Been waiting for a Nas album for a while now, and I'm glad he finally dropped, but this ain't it man.
A collab between him and Preemo seemed like an ultimate combination, but it turned out a lot more dissapointing than I was expecting. I expected surprise features, but no, they didn't get anything apart from AZ and whatever that band is.
I thought the threequel to N.Y. State of Mind would be one of his best songs this decade, but of course, they make something that sounds NOTHING ... read more

EsDeeKid - Rebel

Blacked by a phantom or whatever he said
This was kind of an unserious listen since it's only 20 minutes long and I wanted to see why the hell EsDeeKid is so popular right now. Yeah.. this is straight up TikTok music, now I understand why.
Never been a fan of UK Hip Hop, and it doesn't seem that I will ever be. The Scouse accent also kind of bumps down the enjoyability of this mixtape for me. Timothee Chalamet doing anything in his power to make sure people don't recognize him.

Mac Miller - Balloonerism

Always wanted to listen to a Mac Miller album, I just didn't know which one, so atleast now I've done something about it. After listening to this, judging by this one alone, I think he's the best white rapper. My point might just prove it self further if I listen to more music of his, but now, I'll be fine with this one.
For a posthumous album, this is really decent. I know Circles is probably the better album released after his death, but I think this one is almost just as ... read more

John Michel - Egotrip

edit: im not gonna listen to them
Gonna try and listen to all of the Hip Hop albums in the top 50 of 2025 because it turns out it's the genre I will like most. Well, it was pretty obvious. My top 5 of '25 at the moment is all Hip Hop, so I think it only makes sense to listen to more of them.
The cover looks a bit too identical to Swans' Birthing, so I thought it'd be a rock album before I looked at the genres list. I guess I was a bit stupid for that. Also, I'm now ... read more

Quadeca - Vanisher, Horizon Scraper

Wanted to check this album out way in the past because it used to be at the very top, just never actually did listen to it. It didn't seem very interesting to me, but now I'm here.
Honestly, the vibe of the album is very relaxing and I like it a lot, but then it's also really repetitive and the songs get boring the longer they are. I think this album could definetely use a shorter runtime.
I know psychedelic music is kind of supposed to be a bit repetitive, but I'm not a big ... read more

ROSALÍA - LUX

I'm gonna try and listen to more albums made this year so I can hopefully build my Best of 2025 list by the end of the year. My plan is to listen to the top albums going downwards, but I might aswell just listen to anything that looks interesting.
Been hearing tons of fuss for this album, but I personally don't understand it. I can bet that it's because I don't understand Spanish so that means I don't understand the lyrics, but the vibe experience wasn't amazing ... read more

Sækyi - LOST IN AMERICA

Thank you for the recommendation @OlDirtyOmer!
It's a great fusion of Hip Hop, Jazz and Soul. These genres are some of my favourites, so I obviously really enjoyed the production, and it's hard to say if there were any beats that I didn't enjoy. Maybe track 2 was a bit weaker production wise, but that's about it.
Apparently a lot of people found out about this guy because of McKinley Dixon. I see why. His feature was really great, and easily the best song on this album. ... read more

Black Star - Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star
90

Mos Def has always been one of my favourite rappers ever since I've listened to Black on Both Sides, so it only made sense for me to dig deeper in his catalog and listen to his very first album.
It's not better than his solo debut, which shows that he improved from his previous project, which is great. Still, this was a fun listen, and I totally don't mean that it was bad just because it wasn't better than BOBS.
They had potential to be a legendary Hip Hop duo, but ... read more

Pharoahe Monch - Internal Affairs

Pretty much what you can expect from an underground 90s Hip Hop album. It's average. The cover makes him look like a swamp monster though. Can't say that's average.
Yet another album that doesn't explain the term "Horrorcore" to me. I didn't find anything about this album to be eerie or anything. Somebody got any albums to explain this subgenre to me? It's still confusing me.
Pharoahe Monch has been on my check out list for quite some time now, I just ... read more

Nujabes - Luv(sic) Hexalogy

Only listened to the primary 6 songs on here, but I believe that this is easily the best compilation of all time. Every song is perfect, and nobody should deny that fact.
Some of the best Hip Hop songs I've ever heard are on this, there aren't any flaws on any of the songs, which is actually crazy. The production is just so amazing too.
I was actually surprised when I found out that this guy is Japanese. He is one of the most skilled producers I know of, like damn, I've never ... read more

Discography #18 complete

Stopping here since I already listened to and reviewed HHE 3.
I was actually quite excited about this album, and thankfully, that excitement wasn't thrown to waste. I got pretty much everything I wanted for the last album I had to listen to to finish his discography.
This is hands down his best project this year, and I doubt he's gonna drop something by the end of the year that will outdo this one. FIAAG 3 has been teased for a while, so I doubt he'll ... read more

Westside Gunn - HEELS HAVE EYES

Nearing the end of his discography, there's his newest trilogy, which doesn't start off well, but hopefully the outcome will be a bit better, since I heard volume 2 is pretty decent. Also the spotify cover of this looks so damn goofy.
This is his shortest project, which ended SO damn quickly I couldn't even understand what I listened to. Yeah, it actually isn't really bad if you think about it, there's some decent songs, but why the hell is it so short? He cooked up a ... read more

Westside Gunn - 12

The last album in the series, hopefully not forever. Yeah it's a fine addition to make up for the previous HWH project that totally wasn't 16 minutes long.
Now it's kinda hard to let go because I actually really enjoyed the Hitler wears Hermes projects. Probably the most dragged title in all of rap but it's so iconic.
Another average project, this is pretty much all you can expect from an album in the series, and I'm not dissapointed. There's quite a few notable ... read more

Westside Gunn - Still Praying

His last mixtape (for now), and not a very good way to end them off. My expectations for this were higher, since it's one of his most popular projects, but I guess I've been fooled.
I just wish there were more notable songs on here. Yeah, there's some decent listens, but most of the other songs are slightly below average.
The wrestling covers might become a new signature for WSG. Of course, they looked better before they got copyrighted, but the old covers are still in our ... read more

Westside Gunn - 11

Yeah.. I wasn't looking forward to this one. This is pretty much Hitler wears Hermes 1 if it was made in 2024. It's short, it doesn't have any notable songs and it really lacks material.
Some people think these are unreleased songs from other project he's released, and I really hope so, because I doubt he's serious making a 5 track project. But what can you know, HEELS HAVE EYES is only 10 minutes long, so apparently this EP might not even be unreleased tracks.

Westside Gunn, Conway The Machine & The Alchemist - Hall & Nash 2: The Original Version

They were on a really good run for the first half of the album, but it quickly went downhill with the last 4 songs, they really couldn't have the same quality as tracks 2-5.
I didn't expect The Alchemist to be the producer of this, but obviously, the beats are really nice, and most likely the highest point of this album. None of the stats really hold up to the production, but there's still some decent verse there and there.
Honestly, Conway's part on this was better, and I ... read more

Westside Gunn - And Then You Pray For Me

This album contains some of his worst songs ever, and they were insufferable to listen to.
I don't know why the hell this is so long, you can tell it was definetely rushed, the beats weren't given a second thought, and the good features lowkey carry it.
If it wasn't for Kitchen Lights and Mamas PrimeTime, I wouldn't think much about this album and just give it a hard 3/10, but since there's actually some decent songs here, I have to be a bit more generous.
The whole ... read more

I'm between HWH6 and this one for the 2nd best Hitler wears Hermes project. It's a tough choice, but I think there's more memorable songs on here, so this is better in my opinion.
When I first saw the last few projects in the series I thought he was just naming them after random numbers, and it was just a few days ago when I found out they're actually a part of the HWH series.
Anyways, this was so far the best WSG album that isn't a must-hear. I don't think there ... read more

Can't catch a break from these mid ass mixtapes.. Also what is this PaRappa looking cover, I know I'm not bugging right?
Not saying it's bad or whatever, but come on, I was thankful that I got to listen to a good album after some mid projects, and now we're back at it again.
There's only one highlight here, and it's not even very good, but it stands out to the rest of the mixtape. Some of the songs are quite close to the level of it, but I guess it's fair to ... read more
