A messier and more sporadic album than “Heaven to a Tortured Mind”, but simultaneously one with a bit more daring.

If Fear Fun was strongest in its individual songs, Honeybear is strongest in its larger scope, each piece of lyricism and instrumentation supporting another across the entire album.

The band’s mostly able to nail the dance punk sound they’re going for, but they miss the mark just often enough for this album to fall a little short of expectations. Nonetheless, they’re still able to make hits (get it?) and the cover art is absolutely killer!

Tyler the Creator? More like… Tyler the INTROSPECTOR! In all seriousness, though, this album feels like the most personal he’s ever made, even on previous projects with themes about his life he still seemed to be embodying a different character. Musically, it’s smoother, jazzier, and more sensitive on some songs than even Flower Boy and Igor were.
