my pick on 1001 albums you should listen to before you die AOTY edition (#994)

파란노을 [Parannoul] - After the Night
100

i absolutely love this album. after about a year now im finally comfortable with saying this is a 10. genuinely i dont think theres a single moment without brilliance in this album, and the live version of into the endless night is one of the best songs i have ever had the pleasure of listening to.

파란노을 [Parannoul] - Sky Hundred
80

this album (mostly) fixed my one problem with parannouls music. hint: i think the best project is after the night (the one with live instrumentation).

often ive found his inst programming to be pretty robotic and was never really able to get over it. i felt that after the night held all the true and fully realised versions of the tracklist as they were way more dynamic and human.

on this album the noise is cranked up 10 fold, in the drums especially. it essentially masks the occassionally ... read more

underscores - fishmonger
80

wallsocket is a huge improvement but this is still a raw, beautiful, fun and essential album.

Ghais Guevara - BlackBolshevik
80

the peggy comparisons are there but this project is more overtly political and lyrically dense than peggys ever been. the production is mostly amazing, i dont love the mix (wish it was more in your face) but overall yeah this is really fucking good.

Polyphia - Remember That You Will Die
60

how i listen to this album (altered tracklist):

The Audacity
Neurotica
Reverie
Playing God
All Falls Apart
Bloodbath
Ego Death

this is imo a much better sequencing of the album, cuts out all the genuinely abhorrent garbage polyphia put on this album and reveals the good album hidden under said garbage.

凛として時雨 [Ling tosite sigure] - just A moment
90

i fw this album super heavy. the epitome of the absolutely insane japanese style of garage rock where noone gives a fuck about tempo changes and randomly throwing in E sections into a song.

Björk - Vespertine
100

before i listened to this album i liked bjork, i thought she was a great artist and i thought some of her tracks like hyperballad and joga were absolutely amazing 10/10s. but listening to this album made me realise just how amazing she really is as an artist.

even on homogenic which i think is an amazing album some tracks like 7 years and alarm bell dip in quality (at least for me). this is the first of bjorks albums where i feel like shes reached that level of perfection found in tracks ... read more

Billie Eilish - HIT ME HARD AND SOFT
70

billie further proving shes one of the best in the modern pop scene. there are a few duds here but overall i quite enjoyed this album. most of the duds come from the songs just being boring not overtly bad which i think is this albums biggest flaw, that it gets quite boring at times. the trajectory is definitely still up, this being an improvement on her last the same as her last was an improvement on her first.

fav. chihiro, lunch, the greatest, blue
least. the diner, l'amour de ma vie

JPEGMAFIA - LP! (Offline Version)
90

there is a huge problem with this album, that being which album is the real album. and im not talking about online vs offline im talking about slight differences in mixing between individual tracks of offline and online and the offline ep on streaming. peggy has also updated the mixes on offline multiple times since release so that in its current state about a quarter of the tracklist have imo inferior mixes on offline compared to on other releases:

dirty online>offline the mixing on the ... read more

JPEGMAFIA - I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU
90

edit: back down to 95 its not in my roatation nearly as much.

edit: 95 -> 97: every song i didnt like initially has grown on me heavy and the middle half of the album has been constantly in rotation for the past few weeks.

hey the album art looks like you wont go before youre supposed to by knocked loose

the album straddles between an in your face industrial metal rap blend with blaring electric guitars and an intimate style with soul samples and orchestral instrumentation. the blend ... read more

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
90

this album is such a journey, man.

Björk - Homogenic
90

what the björkma

Deftones - White Pony
60

leaves turn inside you by unwound is one of my favorite albums of all time. this feels very similar stylistically in a lot of ways, except that its a lot more heavy. really enjoyed.

fav tracks: Rx Queen, Digital Bath, Knife Prty
least: Street Carp, Feiticeira

Danny Brown - Quaranta
80

such a journey. i listened to this the day it came out, not at all what i expected but over time ive come to realise that this is probably dannys most consistent and focused album.

Danny Brown - XXX
80

theres like a void of bad tracks between Pac Blood and Monopoly but the rest of the album saves it. its unfortunate because some tracks like die like a rockstar and 30 are the best hiphop tracks ive ever heard but tracks like radio song drag the project down so much :(

Radiohead - In Rainbows Disk 2
60

this is a testament to how good the tracklist and sequencing on in rainbows is. most of these are pretty good tracks on their own, yet i could not imagine a single one being on in rainbows, both due to the difference in quality between the bsides and asides, and simply due to how tightly woven the tracklist of in rainbows is. not a single track can be removed or added or swapped out from that album it is literally perfect.

i havent talked about the bside at all really, its pretty good too i ... read more

マキシマム ザ ホルモン [MAXIMUM THE HORMONE] - ぶっ生き返す [Bu-ikikaesu]
90

i hate the "omg chainsaw man" and "omg death note" reviews on this album. theyre so reductive and really take the spotlight away from the actual music, which is some of the most balls to the walls creative, genre bending and constantly surprising metal i have ever listened to. this has become genuinely one of my favourite and most listened to albums of all time. that being said i did discover this album from death note :)

fav: Shimi, Akagi, Zetsubou Billy
least: none
